You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
We're currently having a bit of electrical work done, new sockets, switches and the like, so there are a lot of new chased channels in the walls of the house. We'll also be getting a full refit of central heating in the coming months, so that'll knock a few chunks out too. Oh, and probably removing an old fireplace and fitting a woodburner (this is STW after all) so that'll make a bit of a mess of one wall.
The plan was always to get a plasterer to come and reskim everywhere anyway, but would your average plasterer expect us to sort out the 'worst' of it (like fill in the chased channels left by the electrical work and other big holes) and they'll just do the final skim, or would they do the lot?
If I was paying a plasterer, it would be to do the bits I couldn't do. i.e get a good finish on a skim.
Filling holes and doing the prep work is easy unless you want to pay someone extra to do it.
Due to shrinkage it might be best to have the worst of it filled in first and allowed to dry fully before skimming. I am sure they would do this for you at your expense.
Not a plasterer, but from the plastering that we've had done in our house over the last few yrs, I'd say that they would do the lot.
We had similar, loads of chased out walls from rewire. Plasterer did the lot.
IHN - I think you and I are having a race to finish our houses first...!!
I am getting a plasterer in to do the whole lot, then get the sparky back for second fix.
However, as we're having the loft done, I've held off getting 'finishing work' done before the majority of that is done - don't want to crack our new ceilings!

My money's on you...
The plasterer will do it but a) you should let him know so he allows extra time (you'll need to wait a day or so for the 'filler' to go off), and b) he'll charge you extra as it'll be additional materials and labour.
Personally I'd go down to wickes and buy a bag of bonding and fill the holes myself. It's about £7 a for a large bag IIRC and easy enough to mix/apply.
If you do it yourself make sure you give the edges of the raggles a good damp and press the plaster well in.
IAAP
Get a bag of bonding and some pva
Water down to he pva slap it about in the holes wait a few hours and slap some bonding in rough, book your plasterer for a few days and you've saved yourself £100-200 to spend elsewhere

First question I'm going to ask all future plasterers that we intend to hire is, do you seal with pva. If the answer is yes I'm getting someone else in.
Hateful stuff to prep for decorating! In answer to the op as others have mentioned, the plasterer will do the lot.
Bonding as in this

Edit, what you linked to is fine but ready mixed wil be more expensive. Just buy a bag of the above and mix a small amount up at a time in a bucket. Fill the bucket to about 1/4 or 1/3 full with clean water, then slowly add scoops of bonding and mix with a stick. Once it gets to a stiff mousse kind of consistency apply it. Don't make up too much either, once it starts to go off you have about 30 seconds to use the rest of it up 🙂

(I'm stopping now!)
yeah fill with bonding save a few quid like most things plastering is all about prep work
better to be a little recessed then proud (page 192)
pik n mix - pva is for between old work and new not between skim and paint, i cant imagine why anyone would pva over fresh skimming. if the paint wont stick it can be because the plasterer has closed it down too much (polished it)
Always uni-bond before painting. Smoother to paint.
Yes - if the plaster has been polished too much it will peel off. But it will also peel off if you haven`t sealed wall and paints too thick also.
Cheap and easy method of sealing after plastering is a handful of wallpaper adhesive flakes mixed into a bucket of water.
Unibond before painting? Nope, but I have only been plastering for 31 years,so what does my suggestion of using cheap emulsion watered down matter?

This is still a cheaper and easier method to seal wall/ceiling after plastering. Quicker and less mess than watered down cheap emulsion too ...
Think most plasterer would rather do their own backing coat in electrical chases, doesn't take long, will be done properly and won't add much to the overall job price.
Getting over proud, badly applied hard wall/bonding would cost more.
Not sure why you'd ever want to seal new plaster with anything other than a wash coat of cheap matt emulsion, does the job really well and puts some colour on the walls.
cheap emulsion watered down
What I've always done - you have the emulsion already.
The plasterer will do the lot. Tbh I reckon the extra cost would be worth it for the peace of mind of guaranteeing the work.. If u get a crack or owt like that anywhere where u prepped, the plasterer would be well within their right to say sorry pal tough shit if u ask them to come and rectify something. Not worth the hassle imo.
Watered down emulsion owa here too.
+1 Tonyd, premix stuff cracks, it's as bad as premix grout. Also +1 duckman works wonders. You can if you really want get a sprat sealer, u had to use this on outside of house due to dry flaky surface I was painting on, but for indoors complete overkill.
If you have filled the Raggles it is also a pita anyway. I would block them out no more than 24 hours before I was skimming over, otherwise it sets like hell where the Raggles were. Get a price for both.
