Hey Peeps

Went on a photgraphy course with my bro on Wednesday to finally get myself pointed in the right direction. Came away seeing things much clearer so time well spent.

Anyway, to keep me motivated and make sure I'n not putting the camera down for months at a time like I was i've decided to do a 365 project. Hopefully this should keep me focused (excuse the pun).

So who's on Flickr etc? I'm wanting to add some contacts so i've got a few peoples pics to draw from for inspiration.

You lot are always so nice 😉 and likely to have the same kind of interest as me thought it was worth a punt.

Feel free to throw some links on here to your pics or email in profile if your wanting to keep things more private

Cheers fellas

I am 😀 http://www.flickr.com/photos/swavis/
A few things I've tried recently were long shutter speeds for the waterfall, of camera flash for the water splash and panning during the world cup.

I took a step back from photos for a bit after taking 16Gb of them in Iceland and feeling a bit worn out. Just got me a new manual focus lens so will be out trying stuff out again. Catch me on flickr (j.buckle) or over on photo4me.com (bucklevision)

I found doing a 365 project was a brilliant way to keep me inspired and busy with the shutter finger. (After almost two years though the motivation's faltered a tad) Give it a go 🙂

love this one Will!! my thoughts on day 2 yesterday!!

Just added you mate, look forward to following your year! Love day 2: faceless Corporation.

Some days you do end up taking crap. Today for example I wont be home till around 11:30pm tonight, and don't have the camera, so it will either be a mobile shot, or a panic get home and try and find something to take a shot of...

swavis, what ND filter are you using for the long exposure daylight shots? i've got a few nice nighttime car trails and the like, want to try some long stuff in the day but don't know what's a decent filter to get.

@ the flatboy, it's a cokin ND8 from here, pretty cheap to just play about with.
Nighttime headlight trails are on my to do list 🙂

Edit - that one is a square filter btw, I got the cheap P-type Kood kit from the same site.

I thought about doing a 365 project.

In the end I settled on a 52 week one. felt that this was definitely achievable but that 365 was going to be hard and it'd end up putting me off as if I wasn't succeeding

Results so far

TFB - if you decide you like long exposure daytime shots, I'd recommend getting a 10-stop filter (ND110). I got the B&W one from warehouse express, although as they're not cheap you really need to think about what size you want. The quality is excellent though. You'll also need a tripod + remote control as your exposure times will be 2mins+

These were taken with mine:

A few pointers I've learned along the way:
- Compose & focus your image before putting the filter on & then change to manual focus. I also use ND grad filters on bright days, so sort out where these need to be before putting the filter on too.
- Get a remote with a lock-out, or better still a built-in timer. Holding a button down for 5 minutes is a chore.
- Use the mirror lock-up function if you've got it to minimise vibration (this may be ovekill, but meh).
- Make sure your tripod is solid. windy conditions will blur your shots.
- long exposure noise-reduction takes as long to process as taking the shot in the first place. You'll be waiting for 10mins to see if a 5 min exposure has come out right, so consider post-processing to remove noise.
- Always, ALWAYS, shoot in RAW. If you get your exposures slightly out, they can be recovered if you've shot RAW, whereas you're bug*ered with jpeg.

Here's my 365 project from 2010 - very enjoyable but much trickier than it sounds to keep it going.

There are lots of inspirational photographers on here (many of them above). Check out polarisandy as well - very talented.
