Bit a headache with PAYE tax at the minute, essentially nearly half my top line pay isn't making it into my pocket.

Bit of research into the matter is it seems HMRC believe I'm working 2 jobs and are taxing my one income as such.

I worked for company A from September 21 until November 22, moved to company B November 22 until July 24, and moved back to company A. Checking on my government gateway company B seems to have start dates and end dates correct, but it's showing company A twice with 2 different payroll numbers.

Company A have recently changed payroll and HR provider, which hasn't helped.

Is this something we think an 18 hour phone call to HMRC myself will sort, or is this a Payroll provider issue. I'd just like it sorting fairly quickly and painlessly as possible as things are getting tight.

Any ideas?

I had to call HMRC  recently re my first pension (2 local government ones) and ESA cock up where they were taxing me on something like more than double the income I get.

All I can say is that despite 40mins on hold to get through they were fantastically helpful and the next pay packet from my pensions I got a load of tax back.

Just have your dates and figures handy so you don't have to phone back again and good luck

I’d speak to HMRC directly, they should be able to sort it out.

Usual guidance is to call them as early in the morning as problem, might be worth waiting until Feb if possible .I suspect their phone lines will be extra busy up to the Self-assessment deadline at the end of the month

Definitely call HMRC and do it first thing in the morning, much shorter waiting time.

Sounds like you have most facts at your fingertips but check and prepare carefully for the call. Decent chance you will get it sorted in one go.

If you have an online HMRC login you can sort this via the online chat too, which is good as then you can be doing something else at the same time more easily IME.

Happened to me as well but once I got through to the HMRC it was sorted in a matter of minutes and the monies where paid back in my next paycheck.

The most difficult bit was trying to get through to the HMRC as it happened during tax year end and it took me days to get through!

Update, managed to get through on the phone the next morning. Advisor spotted it straight away, I'd made notes of the figures the evening of the OP, double checked at 6am the next day and there were differences in the figures. When I called at 8am the figures listed were different again, and after the call different again. 4 tax code changes in 12 hours!

Advisor was spot on and changed tax code to what it should be, and already made sure it's what it should be in April. So hopefully refund in next pay, and all be back to normal........
