My wife dropped the lid of the barbecue on her foot this afternoon. Lots of pain, some tingling and numbness. Swelling went mostly down, she hobbled about all afternoon, but as we got into bed she showed me that the injured foot was much colder than the other one.

Called NHS direct, they said it can be serious of course. But I just checked now an hour after bedtime and they are both warm.

Should I be worried?

Did Direct tell you to go to A&E? If they did go but it doesn't sound like she'll die tonight if the swellings gone down.

They couldn't give direct advice without talking to her, but they said to watch for paleness and loss of sensation.

Bah. If she knows her feet are cold, then she must have sensation.. one would assume.. 🙁

Broken toe or foot do you think? Not much to be done for a broken toe unless its the big one afaik, as long as the toes are pink and still have sensation and can be moved you should be right till morning. If there's pins and needles or numbness, they swell right up or go blue it might be best to get it looked at tonight.
Only a techie I'm afraid but next best thing to a para.
If you or your wife are concerned at all then I would give nhs24/111 a bell and maybe pop in to an out of hours. If an a/e is closer or easier by all means go there- you might have a long wait but at least you might get an X-ray to confirm if there's a breakage, and poss some painkillers.
In the meantime RICE is good too.

It was on the top of her foot, not near the toes. She could still wiggle toes and she wasn't overly worried herself. Not sure if the numbness persisted til bedtime or not, she didn't say anything.

Maybe localised swelling restricted blood flow for a time?

It's definitely not swollen right up, definitely not blue.

Hello, paramedic etc... If its warmed up that's good. Google Ottawa ankle guidelines and have a go! If she cant weight bare, then maybe bob her down to a&e tomorrow morning, in the mean time, rest, ice, elevation and ibuprofen etc

Most likely she's twanged a blood vessel (dorsalis pedis on top of foot) and caused a bit of spasm.
If its warm, and not numb, then that's good news.

She could have borked a bone in her mid foot - if it's still v painful, a local minor injuries unit can XR on site to let you know...

Most important. Why did you let your wife near the barbecue? Does she let you near the ironing board?

Is it painful to the touch. Having broken toes and fingers before, they were usually pretty obvious even if they weren't pointing at odd angles (some were)

Weight baring, warm and not too much pain it's probably nothing but if you worried then minor injuries are perfect for that. As DrP says most have X-Ray facilities but they'll only do one if it's absolutely necessary.

Thanks folks - it's warmed up, it's about as pink as the rest of her (which is not very at all) and she's just hobbling around a bit as per a normal owie foot. Some tingling but it's much better. We'll give it a few days and then see how it is.

Panic over 🙂

I do more ironing than she does.. at least I did before I got non-iron shirts.. now neither of us do any!
