I'm looking to get a frame sprayed and have been asked if I can give a RAL colour. I'm slightly colour blind and looking at the sample charts on a monitor isn't easy.

Anyway I'd like something similar to the burnt orange that either Ford or Peugeot use but not sure there's a RAL colour that'll work. Any help appreciated.

Ford
Peugeot

It's not that simple unfortunately.

Are you able to visit the place doing the spray painting? If they are good they should have samples for you to look at, ideally curved pieces. The alternative is a RAL fan deck.

All monitors are different so it's not possible to look at an image and say what the RAL colour is. The RAL fan deck is also pretty limited and doesn't cover every possible colour. There's a good chance that Ford use something they've formulated themselves and doesn't fit RAL.

The examples you give look to be pearlescent as well which affects how things appear in different light.

@johndoh thanks for the links.

@jonba thanks for the post and makes a lot of sense. Unfortunately I won't get the painters to pick something, it's a new frame and it's being built a fair distance away.

Ok, I assumed it was a respray. The guys I use, bettablast have a wall of colour samples.

You can buy the fan cards but that still doesn't help if it is a pearlescent or metallic finish. You can get different fan decks. Some are cheap but it adds up when you need loads.

It's clearly an orange so you could have. A guess at what's close and Google for painted objects.

For example google ral 2001 came up with this

Contact Ford/Peugeot and ask for the colour ref.

Here's another link which might help you -

Hi Op,

There are two RAL metallic options to consider: RAL 2013 and RAL 8029. 2013 is described as Pearl Orange, 8029 is Pearl Copper. Neither will be a particularly good match but if your options are limited to RAL, these might be your best bet.

If the powder coater is willing to order you something other than RAL, take a look at AkzoNobel Interpon Futura range. There are some copper / orange metallics in the collection that are a more interesting. Suggest you ask whether the frame will be clear coated too.
