Just after opinions really

Just had an eyetest and i knew what was coming, they have suggested varifocals. I am of an age where my eyes are getting crapper.

So briefly. prescription is +1 sph, -6 cyl, and +1.5 add.

How much difference will the quality of lens make? The optician sells essilor lens i think and they were going to be c400???? Is the optician the key point and lens less so?

-6 cyl - are you sure - that is very high astigmatism. Contrasting +1 sph is pretty low and indicates long sightedness.
I'm not an optician, just 45 years of being a speccy **** (my current is -3.5 / -0.75 / add +2.00) and from reading around and experience, the higher your sph then the more correction you need = thicker lens or compensate by higher RI lens so it can be thinner and lighter (but also costlier)
If your info is right I don't think you'd need super lenses so £400 seems a lot.
FWIW I've always had glasses from my High Street optician (chain, but not one of the majors) and have even with eyecare discounts been paying £4-500. Because I have kids in Uni, CoL, etc I've just ordered from Glasses Direct (based on recommendation from here) and have ordered new varifocals with the second best lens in and with their frequently available new customer discounts etc. they're costing £115. I don't have them yet (the ordering process as a new customer has I have to say been painful) but others have said they're very happy.

[edit] to answer second point. IDK how lenses are made but suspect nowadays they go to a 'lab' where they're computer cut and ground, etc. so I can't really see why one lab is really going to be much different to another. Someone in the know may put me right on that.

I have worn glasses for my entire adult life and varifocals more recently (last 8 years or so). I use Zeiss lenses and the difference between those and the same prescription varifocals in my Oakleys is massive (Oakleys use a different manufacturer as they are tinted). Don't get me wrong, the Oakleys are very good, but the Zeiss ones are a world apart – there are almost no perceptible spots where vision is compromised. Decent glasses and lenses are something I am always willing to pay for.

A one fifty reading add is low so will be pretty easy to get on with. As you go up it gets more important to get the best you can. If you are on a tight budget don’t be afraid of the cheaper ones, you should have a guarantee as well if you don’t like them. Having a high cyl does complicate things however, so don’t go too cheap. I wouldn’t go internet as the measurement are critical to about 1-2mm.
Not much help I know but if you are skint go cheap, if not, get the best you can. At Specsavers I’d be talking a be top end varifocal with 1.67 material and with a frame of £99 you’d be looking at £338, with a free sunspec vari (std index) or £418 to have both thinned.
I actually think the highest Essilor lenses are very impressive but extremely expensive.
I’m a self employed Dispensing Optician.
