So I've signed up to do that stupid Etape du Tour again. Which means I need another medical certificate signed by a doctor.

My own GPs surgery won't sign it, saying it's against their policy. Last year I went private and spent quite a lot of money on what turned out to be a 5 minute check-up to get one signed. This year I'm wondering if I can save me some money.

I could find somewhere else willing to check me over, for e.g. that Hampden sports place does it but I don't know the cost. Or I could use the dodgy looking/sounding online medical certification people.

Or, I thought, I could ask on here if there are any doctor people able and/or willing to accept a small financial contribution to their standard of living in return for them signing and stamping the form. I will even put in writing that I promise not sue you if I do actually die.

Is this doable? Is this well dodgy?

To be fair Waswas, this is becoming the norm now.

WE’re gettingfed up of the “get a note from your doctor” culture - yes, this is private work and will be chargeable, but in all honesty, sometimes for the £36 I charge for letters (more, if it includes an examination), at the end of the day it’s often ‘not worth it’...

One could argue GPs aren’t trained in sports medicine, and IF something happens and your insurance wants to check up that ‘DrP is adequately trained in assessing sporting fitness’...my gentle shrug of ‘he looked OK at the time’ probably wouldn’t count for much.

GPs have enough to do that we HAVE to do, that these extras, plus the sueing culture, mean it’s simply too much hassle.

DrP (Currently on me hollibobs in Morocco!!)

fair enough DrP - private it is then OP - I'm not sure 'I pinky promise not to sue' will cut it with the Professional Indemnity insurers.

I'll let you get back to your exfoliation regime, DrP.

I went to get one from my GP earlier this year, and she was happy to sign it, I think quite happy that one of her patients was doing physical activity, and she got to sign me up for a healthcheck which no doubt helped to check her KPI box this year.
And when I asked how much the certificate would be she wouldn't take any money. It might be becoming an issue for foreign events though - if we can't get the paper. Previously I've got round it by getting a BC race license, but as I've decided not to remain a BC member any more that option's out.

Many thanks for the feedback chaps. I do understand why doctors and surgeries are less willing to sign the forms in this litigious world.

I'm thinking this year I will go to the Hampden folk as I do quite like the idea of having the proper full-over physical check-up they do before signing. When I paid £100+ last year to have my pulse, blood pressure and breathing checked (and have the form stamped) I did think it could be a nice little side earner for any Dr Nick Riviera types.
