Currently reassessing my life choices/career path (lack of)/future. Plenty of jobs out there but the ones I want to do I'm not qualified for.
I don't fancy university (as in uni full time and working some other job whilst there) but I'd really like to do an apprenticeship, learn on the job and (if available) train and get qualifications whilst doing it
Only stumbling block is that at nearly 37 I'm 20 years older than a typical apprenticeship applicant.
Has anyone done anything similar? How did you go about convincing your employers to go for you instead of a teenager fresh out of school?
There a few different ones out there at the moment, the one I'd really like to do is for BAE. I have contacted them asking about the age factor but not heard back yet
I've looked at it several times but never found a company who are actually looking for over 25's.

Was an excellent report about Jaguar/Land Rover taking on a woman in her 30s a coue of years ago. Think she had taken a long break while raising her family. I hadn't realised mature apprentices existed till then.

How about trying your local electricity distribution network operator? I got on a graduate scheme with one dispute being 15 years past graduation. If you fancy something hands on, most are crying out for jointers, fitters and linesmen.

In Scotland we have an adult apprentice scheme for electricians. A lot of employers look for adult apprentices as the can be much more focussed and disciplined than a 16 year old! If that sounds of interest then I have plenty of info to share 🙂

As an ex apprentice at BAE (still here now), I can say there was a few 'more mature' apprentices in my year and the other years I came in contact with. Funnily enough, there was a piece on the intranet the other day about a recently out of his time chap talking about his time as an apprentice. He joined in his early 30's I think, but has now really progressed and is doing really well for himself. He started off as a bus driver who had always been interested in engineering, and his route took him past the Warton site every day. One thing led to another and he got on the scheme. He mentioned that the financial constraints were tough for a while but the pay progresses every 6 months or so. And the pay is quite competitive once you're out of your time.
A great apprenticeship scheme to get on if you can. I don't know what I'd be doing now if I hadn't.

Thanks ekul, that's really encouraging. I'd be looking at a position at the Telford site (similiar to the bus driver, I've driven past it every week for years interested in working there)
Good luck with it but bear in mind that state/ local funding for the employer may not be forthcoming if you all ready have an NVQ3 or 4. Guess who ran afoul of this little ruling 5 years ago?
