Garmin Instinct user for last two years - battery isn't lasting long and the start button and buzzer is busted. Plus it's never been that great, I've suffered Garmin's idiosyncracies for years.

Casio model in title comes in at around 250eur. Watching a few reviews, it look promising, I like the Android system and it looks to do a lot more than the Instinct.

Used mainly for MTB and trail running. Anything better at the price?

Really overpriced. What functions do you need?

Really overpriced

You might be right (even at 50% of RRP). It occurred to me after I posted. It's just a basic Android smar****ch innit? Mainly liked the fact it works with viewranger, I do use nav on the Instinct but it's basic and often means stopping and getting the phone out. Wondering if a Xaomi or something would do the same job.

Just compared the dimensions with my Instinct - Casio is HUGE. Going to look at fixing the Garmin I think.

Any of those new GShock sports any good.  The instinct usually gets a good rep, I’m shocked.

Instinct UI is excellent, except for racing your virtual self which invariably crashes the display (it actually does record the activity). The start button lost its click early on, and tbh should've gone back under warranty. Battery is weak now and finally the buzzer is bust. Not super impressed with it, but that's Garmin through and through IMO, they love to make brilliant, flawed devices.

Out of interest, what's an Apple watch like when used with ViewRanger etc for mapping?

An Apple Watch with WorkOutDoors is definitely worth a look. I’ve been using mine in preference to a Garmin Fenix 6.

Looks good but already paid for Viewranger to get the local IGN mapping, also have an OS sub for when I'm in the UK.

Apple watch looks a bit vulnerable for trail runs & MTB although the instinct isnt scuffed at all despite 2 years of scrambling up sandstone crags etc. so maybe it's not as harsh as it would seem

i have a silicon bumper from spigen on mine.

if you don't have an iphone then the functionality is pretty limited.

if you do have an iphone then it'll use the phone GPS if its in bluetooth range of the watch.

I have viewranger on my phone but never really used the phone app.
