My lawn is in a state, weeds, sparse grass, moss etc.

Is this a decent time of year to kill it, rake/scarify, re-seed etc? (In Edinburgh)

I raked it hard & reseeded a few years ago, it made **** all difference, am loathe to do it again without results, would it be expensive to get a man in?

I'd leave it a few more weeks before scarifying (as in 'proper' scarifying using something like this http://www.hss.com/g/62316/Lawn-Scarifier.html) - then seed it and leave till the spring.

Or get a man in (like I do, £120ish a year for lawn feeds, weedkillers etc). I then use my little electric scarifier (from Freecycle) to comb the grass and lift any moss out.

It seems a bit early or late to rake it. I would leave it till early spring, when it starts to dry out a bit, then give it a good going over before reseeding it.

IANAL

I scarify in Autumn and Spring.

Best thing with lawns is regular maintenance eg apply feed, weed and moss killer throughout the year.
