We found out last week that our cleaner has been stealing, amongst other things to go in her pocket was a high value ring that belonged to my wifes grandmother.  It is very distinctive and totally irreplaceable in terms of sentimental value.

The problem, apart from the fact that she stole it, is that she did so two months ago and we don't even have a picture of it.

Police are doing what they do. It hasn't turned up in local jewellers so, if she has sold it it most likely found its way to a jewellers in Edinburgh or, possibly, Glasgow.  Short of hitting the tarmac and visiting every jewellers in town, is there a smarter way to approach this? Are there any reliable online databases, emailing lists or forums? Any facebook groups or other ways of tackling this?

i know we are fighting a losing battle but we need to try.

Thanks

I’d say without a picture you’ve got two challenges - letting people know what they are on the look out for and proving it’s yours if it does turn up.

if it’s a destintive brand, style, is hallmarked (and you know the hallmark or whatever) there’s something to go on ‘expensive old ring’ doesn’t narrow the field.

The best bet is to have an idea of what else has gone - a ring being offered to a dealer along with items x and y.

a lot hinges on how criminally minded your cleaner was. A tempted amateur might try and sell it locally or directly

someone more connected would sell it to a fence who’d be smarter about how and where to sell it.

and... of course your cleaner might not have sold it yet.

It's not a brand, it is an original art deco ring. It has a unique engraving in the band which we could identify. It's empire set sapphire surrounded by sapphire and diamond baguettes, set in platinum. Very distinctive.

Have you / Police / Local Hard Man asked her where it is, or if sold, sold to whom?
