Hey all, bit of a strange one but hopefully someone might be able to point me in the right direction.

So my nans phone only rings once.
If I'm calling her, it sounds like it's just ringing and ringing and the answer machine doesn't kick in.

Phones are 3 Panasonic wireless argos jobbies which are new as she had this issue before so these were bought as replacements.

Internet and phone line is talktalk FTTC ifi recall.

Possible complication is she has an emergency health line thing plugged in, this consists of a control box of sorts and a necklace with and emergency button incase she takes a fall or something.

Her Internet is fine and the phone works fine other than it only seems to ring once at her end. Sometimes.

So she's had open reach out and it sounds like they modernised /upgraded her master socket and that solved the issue for a while but now it's back!

I'm reasonably astute with this stuff as a telco layman but I'm a bit flummoxed.

I'm thinking to try new more basic phones as these Panasonic ones are far more fully featured than she needs, but then she did have the same issue which seemed to resolve when she bought the new phone set for a time.

Talktalk have allegedly tested the line with no issues found, and to be fair, the Internet is fine and the phones work aside from this one ring at her end issue.

She's going to email me the details of her emergency call system tomorrow as I'm not exactly sure how that's plumbed in but it seems to be a really weird intermittent issue that doesn't nesseserilly seem related to that.

Currently I'm thinking she may have inadvertently done something to the Panasonic phones and some sort of hard reset is in order.

I don't live local though so that's problematic especially with all this flu going about, as she's 92yo

Wtf lol!

She could have changed a setting on the phone - MIL had redcare and we'd not touch anything further than the handset.

How nearby are you ? Worth going round to see if you can replicate the issue or change settings.

If she's like MIL, she'll probably have messed a setting up.

MIL had a basic mobile that she used more TBH.

We used to get all sorts of random shoot TBH, and it was usually 'fiddled' with.

Thanks fossy, that's my current line of thought. Although a config setting that stops it ringing more than once seems a bit.. Silly, but you may well be right

I've asked her to email me the model of the phones she's got so hopefully I can look up a RTFM and see what's what and either revert what she may have done or do a hard reset on the phones.

I've not had a house phone for about a decade so I'm a bit out of touch when it comes to these over engineered multi base land line phones lol

This is known as ring trip. If Openreach have fitted a new faceplate, remove the first section (two screws) and plug the phone into the socket behind. I appreciate she will not be capable of this but it's designed to be performed by the customer.
This will disconnect the broadband, health monitoring line and any other extensions or equipment)

If it rings fine in the test socket, it's a problem in the house, either wiring or equipment. You are permitted to add and remove connections to the rear of the faceplate you removed, add or remove one item at a time until you identify the culprit.

Interesting, thanks.
I'm aware of plugging into the real master/test socket behind the main face plate.

A good way to isolate the issue but I'm not sure that's the cause.. I'm familiar with disconnecting the ring wire to improve Internet stability, is that the same or similar to a ring trip? Ring trip is not a term I'm familiar with.

Oh and lots of thanks by the way all who have replied,

I am not familiar with the term ring trip either (but I'm not a telecoms person) but that was what I was going to suggest. You need to ascertain if the problem is in the house or not then remove all device plugged into the rest of the house and see if that solve the problem. If it does plug each in tern and see what kills the phone. If with nothing plugged in but the internal wiring connects kills the phone its the internal wiring and you need so start isolating parts of the internal wiring.

If in doubt also take a basic phone that you have proved else where with you to test if its the phone that is the issue.

Do you have 3 cordless phones? I.e. they each have a base that plugs into a wall socket? If you do, and you have another device plugged in, then you may be exceeding your REN level.  This is 4 on BT lines, and whilst most phones have an REN of 1, some can unofficially go over this and cause problems.

Richardk is correct although I can't remember if it causes ring trip or no ring at all. I didn't mention it as I think it was more of a problem with old corded phones that don't plug into a mains socket...but the health monitoring line, and other stuff like extra bells, redundant sockets and heating oil tank automatic ordering doodahs may add up and exceed the REN.
