I have a problem and I need help from the resident iPhone experts of STW . I bought a cheap USB charger on holiday in Cyprus and long story short it fried my iPhone 4s . Killed it to death . I've put a new battery in just in case that was the issue but it didn't help . I'm not arsed about the actual phone itself but I've got holiday videos on there which is like back if possible. Before anyone says it I'll just get in there first and say no I didn't upload anything to the cloud or anywhere else . Yes I know

No power means no recovery. There may be a way but I doubt it's cheap or simple.

That's what I'm worried about Drac. I'm just clutching at straws here because as we all know stw is the font of all knowledge (sometimes).

Wysiwyg is the man who may know how to restore the power.

The circuits before the battery must be pretty limited....
As it happens i have a 4s open on my desk ... (as most people do ?)

The ribbon from the battery connects under the funny L shaped jobby and I've found that not connecting to be the usual issue...

I can't really see the charger having damaged past that... but it's possible...

If it was me I'd get a working 4s (even if screen is damaged etc.) and try and just replace everything BUT the motherboard into your current frame...

Keep connecting to iTunes and as soon as it actually starts working do a backup....

With luck you might then be able to get it working permanently....

Apple....it just works.

Couldn't resist, sorry. Not constructive and im an iPhone user myself!

They are overpriced and average at best, only reason I stay with them is the awesome iTunes library....take it to an independent expert, do not take it to an Apple 'genius'....they will try and sell you an upgrade.
Take it to one of those little kiosks you see in shopping centres and explain about retrieving the video in particular, you'll be amazed what they can do.....Apple must hate them!

Hardly Apple's fault if you've plugged in a charger made by Lapsang-Souchong and fried it.

Have you tried just plugging the iPhone into a PC / MAC and syncing with iTunes, even if the phone itself appears to be dead? Sometimes this works depending on what part of the phone is actually broken.

If not, you need to find an iPhone repair place that can handle micro soldering / logic board repair. Just Google - cost likely £100+.

Lesson learned sometimes there is a good reason why genuine Apple stuff is more expensive.

The one on the left is the genuine Apple charger. All those extra components aren't in there to add weight:

Good point it could be the screen backlight is borked.

If you really want your data back then I always recommend CBL Data Recovery. They've been cheaper than other similar firms when I've used them for work over the past 10+ years. I'm guessing they can do phones. They will let you know free of charge what they can recover from your device and if you don't want to go ahead they'll just return it to you.

Alphabet thanks I'll try them . I've plugged it into the laptop and it definitely seems dead . I contacted premier computers in Preston who are an apple repairer but they weren't interested. I wouldn't have thought using a crappy cheap charger would kill it either but it did .

Do you have an iCloud account ? If so there is a chance the photos etc where uploaded automatically.

Go to iCloud.com and put in your acccount email and password. You can do this from any computer

As an aside I think trying to get data off the phone will be very difficult / expensive due to security features. You may find a non-Apple repairer who could power up the phone which would them allow you to transfer off the data

Good luck

I assume that you've tried re-booting it? (Hold down sleep & home buttons for ~30 seconds).

Did you try connecting to a working iPhone assembly but with the motherboard transferred?

But to be fair, no-one knows what went wrong. It could have been something in the phone that failed first.

See above for details on why Apple chargers cost more.

However they should really build protection into the phone....
They actually instruct you to plug it into non-apple chargers (a PC's USB port) ... and realistically you can't ALWAYS use an apple charger.... (I have my rechargable batteries) .. air port chargers etc. etc.

They do, but who knows what happened - if the charger put out 230V then the protection would have been fried and it may need one of these - and a lot of dexterity.

Remove the battery and plug it in, does the apple logo keep showing?
Crap chargers usually blow the IC chip, if you just want to remove data you need to make sure your replacement battery is charged, access to another 4 is needed to charge or borrow a battery. Hopefully a fully charged battery will allow it to turn on long enough to backup.

It wont actually let you do anything as it creates a boot loop, but itll give me an idea of how FUBAR'd it is.
The batteries usually come with some charge so if its installed correctly and youve tried a hard reset (both buttons 10 secs, let go of home) and it still didnt work, its probably fried. But try to acquire a fully charged known quantity battery to be sure

Have you looked at the non-contract prices of top-end smartphones lately, like a Samsung S8?
e Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus is even more, as it costs £779. That's up from the S7 Edge price of £640. Bigger screens, bigger prices. The larger S8 variant also goes on sale April 28 and pre-orders get underway April 20.

Just had a look at iPhone non-contract prices:
The 32Gb iP 7+ is £719, the 128Gb is £819, the 256Gb is £919, so the S8 Plus falls roughly between the two lower priced iPhones.
Back before the iPhone even came out, a shitty phone like the Nokia N95 cost well over £600, without a contract.
Expensive phone is expensive.
And iPhones don't, as a rule, burst into flames in your pocket, unless someone has been monkeying around inside it, or using a cheap knock-off charger. There are plenty of cheap quality ones out there, but if you want to run the risk of trusting some back street trader to sell something for a couple of quid, knock yourself out.

The batteries usually come with some charge so if its installed correctly

That connection can be a real pain .... (in my experience)
There seem to be 3 possibilities ...
1) The phone is fried and the data lost
2) The phone is fried but data intact
3) Battery/charging is fried but the rest of the phone is fine

Given the OP said they just want the data 2/3 seem more likely than 1.
By far the simplest is just to get it working temporarily long enough to backup to a computer. It's as good a chance as any other option.

From experience on the 4s I'd say the battery connection is awkward so its well worth re-seating the battery ribbon .... but when changing the battery on the 4s you have to pull everything else out.... so it could be the screen etc.

If you start off with the assumption the whole phone is fried, reassemble and then it turns out it's not starting the assumption is still because the phone is fried....

Hence I'd take the assumption the phone isn't fried and one of the fiddly bits is not correctly seated or even a ribbon cable was damaged....(i.e. operator error putting it back together)

When I've done this I've found I'd messed something up.... reassembled and it worked...

In this case it seems safe to assume the charging circuit is fried .. so just aiming to get a sync with iTunes on battery seems a good aim.

If that doesn't work then right at the other end forensic recovery is a very expensive option. I did once look into it for work (on a drive but same principal) and the price had a few zero's too many at the end.

OP in case you didn't know wysiwyg runs a repair business in his spare time, as such his suggestions are gold.

@stewart you can plug an iPhone into a wide variety of chargers and it works just fine, phone, ipad, computer, blackberry, battery packs etc ... just not a crappy cheap one which delivers the wrong current/voltage etc

Can I suggest something really basic to try...
The cheap charger may not have fried anything.. the phone may have just gone totally flat as it didn't charge.
You didn't say how it died.. was it a fizzy smokey mess or was it just off when you came to it?
The charge socket fills up with fluff if you keep the phone in your pocket. Does the charge connecter feel like it goes all the way home?
Get a pin and very gently scrape out any fluff from the phone socket and try to charge again if any comes out.
