I have to spend 5 hrs in Huntingdon on Thurs with our working cocker. Now I don't mind walking around the town centre for a time but we will both be going stir-crazy after an hour. Any good places to walk the dog around there? Lakes, country parks, woodland, etc. I have the use of a car so a short drive to somewhere interesting would be fine.

Anyone know of anything suitable?

Ian

Hinchinbrooke country park is just up the road past the train station. Can walk all around the place

+1 on Grafham. It's not far from Huntingdon at all & about 8 miles all round......plus, there's a decent sized Rutland Cycling shop in the car park so you can have a mooch in there.
If you do a complete lap there's a couple of villages to get through, but I don't think there are any stretches with no pathway....

If you wanna avoid the parking charges, a mate & I used to park at the end of church road in Grafham for our weekly ride. It's popular with dog walkers though & there's only really room for 3 or 4 cars.

You can (hopefully) see the parking spot here:

Hinchingbrook Park is nice and relatively close, as is Houghton if you fancy a muddy riverside walk. Alternatively you could drive out to Godmanchester and walk around Portholm Meadow (England's largest watermeadow).

I lived a few miles down the road, near to St Ives, up until last year. We used to walk our dog fairly regularly at Hinchingbrook Park, as mentioned above. If you've got access to the Ordnance Survey maps for the area, we used to do quite a nice walk along the public footpaths & bridleways from Houghton Mill (between Huntingdon and St Ives), along the river and around the Hemingford Abbots area (worth it if only to see the spectacular houses in Hemingford Abbots!).

Now I don't mind walking around the town centre

Huntingdon wasn't included in the publication "Britain's crappest towns" but they did use it for the cover photo.

.....Crap Towns 2 - although now redeveloped

IIRC also first Sainsbury to use UV lighting in the toilets so the locals couldn't find a vein and only place I've seen card shops doing 'buy 2 get 1 free' on valentines cards

From the High St, head south under the A14 to Port Holme and the world's your lobster.......

Interesting. I went past on the train on Friday and thought what a lot of pretty spots there were in the vicinity. When I got to my mum's I mentioned that "Huntingdon looks nice", but she replied "you're kidding, it's a crap hole" (not exactly verbatim, she's quite a polite old dear). Looks like she was right.

Thank you every body. Some great ideas, I will take a look at the map and see what suits us best. looks like it is going to be a bright day so maybe a lap of Grafham would be good fun.

Thanks again,

Ian

Grafham's a good shout, there is a pub in Perry a village you'll pass through. I stopped there and met a Minty from the soap Eastenders haha! You could rent a bike from Rutland cycles.

Alternately you could walk from houghton or hrmingford to st.ives. There are a few places to eat there.

Everyone above has mentioned all the good areas locally. Don't go to Huntingdon town centre, it's the most depressing place on earth. It didn't use to be, but the town council have done a pretty good job of robbing the centre of anything worth seeing, unless you're a fan of charity and coffee shops.
Hinchingbrooke Park (I used to go to school there), Grafham, Godmanchester, St Ives are all fine for a walk.

I’d walk from houghton mill into St Ives, have a slab of cake from Tom’s cakes, then walk either back the way you came or do a round trip via Hemingford.

If you like your spirits Wadsworths in St Ives have a huge range and is worth a visit.

Any of the walks along the river are worth doing. You can walk along the guided busway from St Ives and turn off at the nature reserve at fen Drayton for example.

Those that have been saying Huntingdon is a shit hole are over selling it.

That's unfair, Huntingdon has improved. People don't walk into pubs with meat cleavers anymore and stick them in people's heads.

Admittedly that was oxmoor

I used to Police the place and it is a complete hole ! Some nice woods locally though the other side of the A 1, Archers wood, Monks wood is nice but getting a little muddy. Grafham is nice when the flies aren’t on the dam. Hinchingbrooke Park is ok, Park in Brampton Road side for free,
In the town keep your eyes open down side alleys and keep your wallet close

I'm pretty sure that second to central Glasgow, Huntingdon had the highest number of smack heads per capita in the whole of the UK.

If you're in St. Ives, best ale is to be found in the Royal Oak, dogs welcome.
Let me know what you like and I'll put something suitable on. 😉
