It's new but it sounds old in a very, very, very good way:

Just remembered this Beastie Boys-alike absolute banger as well as it came back into rotation on my playlist:

I didn't realise hipster hop was a genre, pretty niche. Is the content complaining about a lack of fairtrade organic coffee? 😉

Far from new, but on my current playlist:

Loyle Carner. Different feel to what’s been mentioned but the man can do no wrong

Also Breakin Bread have a cracking best of 2022 mix of hip hop and adjacent styles that might give you some pointers on their mixcloud page

I love discovering music through recommendations, and some good stuff here. So I've got an idea...

I've created a public spotify playlist. Hopefully this works

Add three songs each.
- your favourite of all time
- something new or potentially under the radar
- something related to the genre but pushing the boundaries

To get us started I've added my three, plus those recommended above.

My three:

– your favourite of all time
Harder than you think - Public Enemy
Probably not my favourite, but a classic and one that came to my head when I was thinking of what to add.

– something new or potentially under the radar
Lights off - Four Owls My favourite UK hip hop, should be on everyone's radar

– something related to the genre but pushing the boundaries
Get got - Death Grips Not everyone's cup of tea, but I love them. This was the song that got me into them

I'm not really an aficionado in this genre, nothing against it but it's just so broad I've barely scratched the surface.

But - saw this originally on one of the new music shows (might have been Mercury, might even have been Jools H) and followed for a bit. I even saw him live - supported by Alt-J who seem to have reversed that billing priority a bit since. And then it came up on a solo drive recently on shuffle and I had forgotten how much I liked it.

[edit - notice someone else already linked something, so this is sort of +1 ing as well]

I follow a blog called CABBAGES , seems to be into my kind of new hip-hop. This was the end of year poll from subscribers, huge variety of superb stuff. If you like to seek stuff out, as I do, all worth investigating. Bought 3 new albums off the back of it

19 - R.A.P. Ferreira, 5 To The Eye With Stars
18 - Earl Sweatshirt, SICK!
17 - Unexplained Aerial Phenomenon, Casual Abductions
16 - Pusha T, It‘s Almost Dry
15 - J.I.D., The Forever Story
14 - Fly Anakin, Frank
13 - Denzel Curry, Melt My Eyez, See Your Future
12 - Vince Staples, Ramona Park Broke My Heart
11 - Open Mike Eagle, Component System With The Auto Reverse
10 - Boldy James & Nicholas Craven, Fair Exchange No Robbery
09 - Saba, Few Good Things
08 - ShrapKnel, Metal Lung
07 - Kendrick Lamar, Mr Morale And The Big Steppers
06 - Roc Marciano & The Alchemist, The Elephant Man's Bones
05 - billy woods & Messiah Musik, Church
04 - Quelle Chris, DEATHFAME
03 - Brian Ennals & Infinity Knives, King Cobra
02 - E L U C I D, I Told Bessie
01 - billy woods & Preservation, Aethiopes
17, 9 & 15 were the ones I bought. My votes went to 5, 14, 19 which obviously I’d recommend. 😊

I'm not up to speed with modern hip hop, the only recent stuff I've heard/enjoyed is Loyle Carner.

I used to listed to a lot of CYNE, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, The Roots to name a few. CYNE were definitely my favourite but they are very much unknown.
