Before i pay the excess for a prober jobber...

I've a potterton Gold HE combi, installed about 4 years ago, ran fine until recently.

We have a small leak on startup in the mornings, can't see anything leaking when I have a looksie so wondered if anyone here could offer anything from similar experience.

heating and hot water work OK, radiators bled ok, they (one) tends to need a bleed every 2 months I reckon, but recently we've been getting this small puddle of water below the boiler.

The pressure sometimes reads below 0.5bar and the system shuts down, I re pressurise to around 1.5bar and it all fires up ok and the radiators get hot. However, the boiler is initially noisy and the pressure ramps to about 2.5 bar, settling at about 2bar. it works OK at this, but not great.

My guess is there's air trapped in the boiler itself, the water leak is from the auto relief valve on the pump, but I'm not sure.

Any hints on what to check before I pay out the excess on my boiler cover?

ta

Might not be boiler leaking, might be pipework?

Sounds lot like a problem with the expansion vessel. As the system gets hot the contents expand and the excess is spat out of the pressure relief valve.

Once water gets past the PRV it's basically knackered as crap gets in the seal and it'll leak forever.

So

a) check out the expansion vessel (got air pressure, no water where there should be air, pipework to it not blocked) and get a new PRV once that's fixed.

Or

b) call out the experts and get it done properly while you make a brew.

I recommend b. 😀

You could throw a tube of fernox leak sealer at it? Would eliminate any small leaks and definitely point to option b...

Sounds very much 99% sure its the expansion tank.

Did mine about 3 years ago, no problems since.
Fitted an external one cheaper /easier

Youtube link -

Not exactly the way I did it , but close enough. I used a flexible tap connector on the feed from the tank to the pipework (just made it a bit easier.

Hope the above helps. I is a simple / cheap job. I think it cost me around £25 for everything
