I might be doing some works adjacent to the Wey Navigation. I've got plenty of info on flood risk assessments etc but cant find any data on frequency of flooding.
Do any locals have any memory of the area near the law courts flooding? Is it a regular thing or very occasional?
Tales of apocalyptic disaster appreciated!
Somewhere between the two. I wouldn't say it floods that high very often but it did in the recent past; people were surfing in the lower floor of the car park next door.

and the time before that was in 1967/8
If i remember Christmas 2013 ago the parking lot behind the cinema/law courts flooded when the Wey broke her banks.
Pics of some parts around Guildford here, though not that specific car park area

Winter 2003 was a bad year as well our workshop backs onto the river.
The floods of 68 would done for us I suspect. not that we where here then
Looking at a planning application in my area the flood risk assessment refers to Environment Agency Historical Flood Map, though not sure where they get it from.
Did find this but not sure how you use it https://data.gov.uk/dataset/historic-flood-map1
However, can't say exactly about round that bit of Guildford other than I remember the 2013/14 flood. I recall one earlier.
I'm downstream a bit over by Woking and history there is 1968, 1990, 2000, 2003 and 2013/14. Typically each time it's happened, Guildford got flooded first.
Twice in the last few years - big ones - a reasonably regular on the flood plain.
Better get some wellies then 🙂
"Area near the law courts" IMHO thats pretty dry, the river / navigation past the station / cinema doesn't over flood very often, can't recall once in 25 years but have been away since 2014. Much more flooding upstream from there and of course there is the big meadow they use as flood control along the Shalford Road near the rowing club. The (now) footbridge by the White House pub has seen floodwaters up to the arch and the old underpass by Debenhams was filled in years ago as it used to flood regularly.
This was in the car park by the law courts. January 2014.
@skaifan excellent although the lower floor is below street level I recall
I remember the 1968 flood. I lived in Guildford park and I walked down to the railway bridge, everything on the other side seemed to be flooded. Days later when the water had gone down they had lines of dustcarts outside Plumbers. They put all the stock out of the basement in the dustcarts, I asked if I could have some records, the record department was in the basement. If you look at the basement from the river side you can see where the windows used to be;-)
I had a mate who lived in the road from the station to the woodenbridge[maple tree close?] lot's of us went round to his house, we wanted to look at his house, while it was knee deep in water, there was his mother trying to clean up and gangs of kids were splashing around.
Ignore part of my earlier comment as I misread law courts as law college. Two different places/part of the river

Yes - the bit they were wakeboarding in is below ground level, but the water was well over ground level anyway. Debenhams was flooded, as were the restaurants in Phoenix Court (Wagamama's, etc.)
Renewing house insurance last time was a hassle as a result. Do you live within 200m of a watercourse - yes. Has that flooded in the recent past - yes. Thankfully Guildford is in a valley (where the ford comes from) and I'm also 30 meters above that waterway!!
Fortunately flooding is pretty well controlled. The Wey Navigation is regularly dredged and the swamps upstream around Elstead make a pretty big holding reservoir.
