Morning all,
Have been thinking of getting an action cam and wondered if there are any good deals around as it's black Friday? Had been thinking maybe an older model 9/10 to keep the cost down a little as from what I understand that's when the better quality stabilization came into play. There are a bunch of cheaper models on Amazon like the Akosa Brave and a Wolfgang something or other however some reviews I've read suggest the GP stabilisation is significantly better. It's intended purpose would mainly be for biking when I'm away in Wales or being out on the paddleboard.
GoPro have, if I recall their spam correctly, a bunch of deal on the newer stuff if you buy direct from them on their website. You might/probably will need to register for their annual sub thing to get the discount, but when I bought the 11Mini, that made it waaaaay cheaper than buying retail, even in Duty Free.
So having had a quick skim on the GoPro site, the subscription is £25 for "up to 50% off" but no way of knowing what the discount for say a Hero10 (£250) would be unless you have already weighed out the subscription cost. I get that the subscription affords you other privileges such as crash replacement but if the discount is say only 10% then its barely worth spending the initial fee. Maybe its just me but this doesn't seem like the best discount model. Why not just lump 20% for argument sake off for the BF sale and had done with it.
Anyways, I emailed them asking of they can confirm the discount for the H10 and will see what they come back with.
£250 is a decent price to be fair, it's dropped a lot recently with the 12 being released.
Sounds like 10% would get you a free subscription.
They have a bundle on 12 for less than £100 more. You might not want to stretch that far, but you're not paying much more for the camera once you take off the cost of accessories.
I have a couple of Akasos, and they're really sensible kit. The image stabilisation definitely isn't quite as good but with the wide field of vision doing it in post and just losing a little bit of image size is a perfectly good option imo. I think if money was no object everyone'd go gopro but I ended up with 2 Akasos for slightly different jobs + an external mic for pretty much the price of one equivalent gopro.
YMMV of course. In the end I can hardly ever be arsed to edit the footage anyway so it's all wasted money 😉

Ain’t that the truth! 😀
Editing takes more time than filming.
When I film a tandem, the freefall is 60 seconds, about five minutes of filming pre-jump and a couple of minutes afterwards. The last edit I did took three hours and lasted about five minutes.
I may have a GoPro 11 (I think, will check model) + 2 batteries and all the kit for sale. Literally two rides old.
I don't have the time or patience to produce the sorts of video I want to produce so think I need to move it on whilst it's still in good condition.
