Considering buying a 2nd hand one, probably the 123 bhp Zetec version.  Any feedback on real world driving experience of these?  Anything in particular to watch out for?

Check if the coolant pipe recall has been done, other than that they seem pretty reliable.

Mine has been fautless over the nearly 3 years I have owned it. I think its a great engine, currently getting about 41mpg but that included quite a few short journeys, normally about 44 mpg.

We have one in the household and it's been excellent. Great round town and plenty fast enough for a weekly 300 mile round trip down the M4. Had no issues with it in three years of ownership apart from the stereo which is useless.

We have one in 125hp mode, great little car.  40k+ miles in 4yrs and still going strong, in fact if we were ever to replace it we'd get another.  It always amazes me how much poke comes out of such a piddling little lump.  Be warned though, if you like to hustle it you'll never get to see 40mpg.  Get a Titanium, the extra kit is worth it

Its a good little engine, but not very economical. Low 40's if your lucky.

Go and drive one.  They are ok but nothing special.  I actually think they are small inside for the outside size and visibility / reversing isn't the easiest.

Echo the above. We had one from new for a couple of years and thought it was ace. Lovely little engine, very smooth. Possibly looking to downsize and the Focus 1.0t will certainly be on the list.

We have the 125hp in the Estate version. It feels quite similar to our Mk1 Focus with the 1.8TDCi diesel; a bit less pull on hills but no problems. I can just get 50mpg on the motorway at 70 by driving gently, but 45mpg is more usual. Making the engine work hard, such as carrying canoes on the roof rack, will knock the mpg down more than it would with a traditional engine. No problems with the engine in 2.5 years from new (the clutch failed after 18months/15k miles but from the reaction of the dealer, it's not common fault).

Have to echo everyones comments, getting 44 mpg, good drive not going to set the world on fire but then buy a Caterham 7 not a Focus for that.

Given it is petrol the economy 'feels' good in comparison to say the bigger Skoda Superb Diesel which is about the same real world mpg for us.

I'd say go for it but then we did 😉 Std STW approach of recommend what you have.

Owned the 125ps zetec version for two years now. Great do it all car. Plenty fast enough for my 40 mile round trip commute on A roads. Finishing isn't quite as good as ze Germans but miles ahead of Kia and other budget offerings.

As others have said, real world mpg is only around 45 mpg and that's only if you don't drive like a twot. The handling is much more direct and less twitchy than others its class which I love. Will probably upgrade to an Ecoboost Mondeo estate when the time comes as they are fantastic engines.

My Dad's 125bhp is giving him 42mpg on long runs*, and he's a pretty smooth sensible driving 71 year old.  The previous 1.4 Golf was good for low 50s on similar runs.

He likes it otherwise though, I think it's the first car he's had with > 100bhp so he thinks it's  a rocket.

* all country roads though not motorways.

My mums got the fiesta 1.0 eco-boost.  The 3-pot engines sound very odd in my opinion.  A bit off beat & sewing-machiney when under load.  Seem reliable enough tho so I'd go for it & get the sucker re-mapped for a bit of extra poke

45,000ish trouble free miles in our 125bhp 6 speed Focus. Great engine, perfect for the car. We got an overall average of 39/40 when we lived in the city. Rural living it delivers an average of about 44mpg. It'll do high 50s/60mpg on a flat motorway and I got an average 49mpg over a 300 mile roundtrip to Dublin which encompassed country roads, B roads, motorway and city driving and I was in a hurry.

The only thing making me want to get something else is a growing family. Great engine, fantastic powerband, does almost everything well.

There was / is an issue with clutch slave cylinder failure contaminating and ruining clutches. Look up on Honest John for more info.

The 1.6 150 is also a nice thing, though pretty rare. Should still do 40mpg....perhaps more consistently. If I was in the market for this size of recent used car, I'd also look at the (non-turbocharged) Mazda 3 Skyactive 2.0 petrol. Even the lower powered ones can be chipped up to the full 170-180bhp by BBR as they are mechanically identical.
