I suggest you get a load of washers from somewhere like B+Q first. You can get a pack of different sizes.

Water off first, obviously! Spanner on hex part of tap under spindle, sometimes helps to tighten first to ease any corrosion then undo and replace washer. Silicone grease on all the threads when you reassemble. If i t continues to drip with a new washer, the tap may need seat resurfacing. Worry about that if it still drips.

Only so you don't embarrass ourself, ask the supplier for tap washers as opposed to gaskets. Also, when you say you want to pry out the odd looking thingy/washer. What exactly are you on about? Have you already unscrewed the brass cartridge from the tap body(Chrome bit)?
If you have a gravity fed system turning off the cold water main will not stop the hot water from running and if it's piped correctly, that should be the hot water tap you're working on... I dunno, you don't sound like you're the man for the job to be honest.

Is the seat for the washer nice and clean?
3/4 tap reviver from screwfix will do.

He's not the man for the job either. There are several different tap reviver's and unless you know which to use, you won't get the tap head back on, or it will be loose.
Edit: my advice is, if you can get it out, take it with you...

Yes, unscrew the whole thing then take it to a good plumber's merchant, not a shed or a bathroom centre.

...and don't even think about doing the job on an evening or a Saturday afternoon when the shops are shutting.

That's almost certainly a cartridge tap (1/4-1 turn to on?) - the small circlip on the top lets the spindle come out once you've removed it from the tap.
Very few have any form of washer in them - they work by turning a plastic/ceramic cartridge closing the throughway. There will be a sealing washer on the base but thats only to seal the cartridge to the inlet - not the waterway like old fashioned taps which take multiple turns.
Wickes do them on the shelf in 1/2", Toolstation do a 3/4" converter so you can use 1/2" replacements although hardly anyone has them that big unless its a continental manufacturer.
Just spin it out and pop to Wickes or screwfix - nowhere really is cheaper.

Have a look HERE to give you an idea.

Maybe but, as he's GOD, this would be a breeze.

this would be a breeze.

Maybe, but he has form for buggering about with that sort of thing - what if he gets bored. I mean, I like a nice glass of red with a meal etc. but I wouldn’t want to bath in the stuff.

Maybe he’s not the man for the job, either...

What they said above about cartridge taps.

And if you live in a hard water area, just take it apart and give it a wipe with some vinegar or lime scale remover, cilit bang etc. If the surfaces of the ceramic disks aren't perfectly smooth they don't seal, so any gritty limescale will cause a drip. So it's worth taking it apart and re assembling before you go off buying bits.

One of the sink taps in the bathroom was dripping, well, it was a persistent dribble rather than drip, so my heart sank when I saw the seat under the washer actually had a small gully in it, allowing water to flow along it.
It was evening, the shops were closed, and I had no inclination to try to replace a whole tap, so I bodged it.
I dried out the seat by using lots of bog paper to suck up any water, then heated it with a barbecue lighter to dry it properly, then mixed up some five-minute two-pack epoxy and dribbled it into the 'hole/groove' in the seat, and left it for a few hours to set.
Then put it back together with a new washer.
That was two or three years ago, mand it's still working perfectly with no drips at all.
Quite pleased with that bit of DIY. 😀

As per the comments above, if its a quarter turn tap its not got a washer. I took the insert into an independent plumbing place and he has a big box of them which he sorted through until he found a match. Fixed the leak, unfortunately the splines for the tap lever were slightly undersized so the lever would sometimes overshoot when the tap was used!

This is exactly what I said above. And the part was sourced from a supposed expert.
If it doesn't work properly, it's a bodge. If you like bodging, carry on.
There's plenty of stupid suggestions above to choose from as no one seems to be able to get that it's not a ceramic cartridge.
Hammyuks post is full of enough misinformation to keep you busy for at least a week.

What is it then? I've replaced a few ceramic carts in my time (I've even filed a bit off the top of one so the lever didn't sit higher than the one on the other side) and it looks like one to me.

Genuinely interested.

If anyone can tell which type of cartridge is in that tap body from the op's photo, you're a better plumber than me.

Out of those three it's the first one as can clearlu be seen by

1. Length of shaft
2. Threads clearly visible below the wee circlip thing.

However i'd definitly be taking it out and down a plumbers merchant

You've just shot yourself in the foot there as you've already stated that

as no one seems to be able to get that it's not a ceramic cartridge.
yet apparently now you don't know which it is?

Unless of course you have used your x-ray vision in which case you're Superman and I claim my £5
