I had an abscess over the weekend which resulted in a lot of pain and my cheek swelling up quite a lot.
I got the the offending tooth out yesterday (emergency dentist, not my own) and the dentist also cut my gum to and squashed hell out of my cheek to get as much of the fluid out as possible, but today, my cheek is still a bit swollen (not as bad as before).
The question is, do I need to go to the docs and get some antibiotics or will the swelling go down over time?

Not a dentist but my lass had the same thing. Swelling took a good few days to go down. She took ibuprofen to reduce the inflammation. Of course the dentist should of advised you in what happens next. You should call your usual dentist to see if you can speak to someone.

I'd suggest seeing your dentist, not your doctor...

Any residual swelling should go down over time; once the tooth is out, any infection should resolve itself.

Mug of hot water with a teaspoon of salt dissolved in it as a mouthwash will help keep the area clean too. Just tastes pretty poor.

If the swelling increases, or gets more painful, see a dentist

I just had a cracked tooth removed yesterday. The dentist gave me a sheet saying that i shouldn't use a mouthwash or gargle, have hot drinks or alcohol, and no strenuous physical activity.
It took 3 different dentists 45 mins to get my tooth out.I thought the first one was going to break my jaw!
One day on and the pain is terrible in my gum despite strong painkillers.

Im still alive and no longer have to wear a burka when going out.
The swelling has slowly been going down, there is still a smallish lump, but its not quite as obvious now.
I am still taking pain killers several times a day, but no where near what I was taking over the weekend.
I wasn't paying much attention to the amount I was taking, just taking them when needed, but it seems I was taking around 400-600mg (ibuprofen) roughly every 3hrs and the packet says you should only take 1200mg per day max!
I needed that much on Sunday, as that is when the fluid started moving from my cheek to my gum as it started forcing the skin away from the bone!

Joe, I thought the 15-20 mins the dentist took to get my tooth out was bad enough!
After about 10 mins she decided to get the drill out and cut the tooth/gum up so she could get it out in smaller pieces, and it still took a fair bit of effort, but it worked.

Don't overdo the painkillers, especially paracetamol!

If the effect doesn't last long enough, alternate ibuprofen with paracetamol, so for example if you take ibuprofen, take paracetamol 3 hours later, then more ibuprofen after another three hours.

You should find it keeps improving from now on...

When it's settled, I'll send you a bill for the advice 😉

Ps chopping tooth up and taking it out in bits if it doesn't want to come out is a good call...

It's better than chopping you up, and you'll heal faster....
