there were some acers for £500 on ebuyer but they appear to have gone. Just want something for 3d modelling.

Thanks vinneyeh I was just looking at the very same thing. Whats the score in regards to 64bit or 32bit? I know how to use programs but haven't a clue about all the gubbins inside, I'll leave that to smarter people.
64 bit in simple terms means you get benefit from using more RAM. 32bit sees massive benefits in adding RAM up to 2GB then it tails off to 4GB (much better to have 2gb fast RAM than 4gb standard RAM on a 32bit OS).
So in theory a 64bit OS can use more RAM to run programs (usually games, media players, photo/video editing software) more quickly.
As for the i7 chip it's great, but by no means necessary if you're looking for good value. There are few programs out there that make proper use of it's power yet, even top games are limited by graphics cards.
However if you're looking to not upgrade or a while then it's a good time to buy. Just don't cripple the CPU with shit RAM/motherboard/GPU
EDIT: yep the i7 would be very very suited for 3d modelling.
3d cad wont benefit from i7 but will benefit from more ram in that you can load much larger datasets .rendering will run a lot quicker FEA will run a lot quicker
i have found 64 bit on core i7 to be rock solid....in all honesty its as good as xp was
shocked at how much I7 has come down my mac pro cost 2.5k only 6 months ago and the acer was a grand but to be honest the amount of productivity i got from both machines paid for itself in the first month......now im finding the core i7 laptop is as capable as the big boxes with the exception of the mac which tears through stuff but maybe more than 500 quid budget
Thanks people I think I might take the deal that vinny posted up. I already own a MBP and as good as it is I'm really just after a windows machine and yes I do know you can dual boot a mac 8)
So essentially i7 max the ram out and bobs your uncle. Think I might upgrade the graphics card.
