Has the horrible sounding cheapo version where you get adverts launched yet?

Lots of of offers around for several free months of Apple TV+ if that's of any interest as an alternative? Details in this thread; https://singletrackmag.com/forum/topic/slow-horses/

Yes. £4.99 a month if you can stand the adverts and £10.99 if you want HD with no ads. I actually think it’s very good value.

Find a friend/family member who'll split their account? It's cheaper (but against the T&C's) to split a 4k account with 4 devices than get 2x HD accounts with 2 devices.

Basic Netflix without adverts is £6.99/month. Can only watch it on one device at a time and its HD not full HD whatever the difference is.

Sky Q have it free for a couple of months, I think. I’ve signed up for it for a bit, mostly for Wednesday, but I’m intrigued by Stranger Things as well. I’ve got a temporary Prime subscription, just to watch The Periferal, but I’ve had to pay for one month, because you can’t download the whole series. I should have waited until the last one then taken out the free trial and binged on the series. I’ll do that with Season Two. Dunno if I’ll bother with Season Two of Wednesday, I’m enjoying it, but not enough to pay for a second season.

Unless there’s a free offer available again.

We cancelled a few months ago when they increased prices. Had the top quality version. Wasn't using it much anyway. Mrs IRC insisted we rejoin so she could watch Harry and Meg.

If she's happy, I'm happy. Went for the £6.99 version. Quality seems adequate on a 55" screen.

I downloaded a few episodes of the IT Crowd to watch during downtime at work. For £6.99 it is pretty good value. May just let it run. I paid £5.95 for a pint a couple of weeks ago.

As thisisnotaspoon has suggested.

If you know someone who has sky with netflix ultra hd package, see if they'll let you use one of their logins. Offer to pay couple of £ per month.

Netflix have been sabre-rattling about clamping down on account sharing for a while but it hasn't happened (yet). I've been paying a friend £1/month to share his account for several years now.

That said,

For £6.99 it is pretty good value. May just let it run. I paid £5.95 for a pint a couple of weeks ago.

This is a good way of looking at it. Subscriptions quickly add up; Netflix, Prime, Spotify, Disney+, new ones are cropping up all the time like Paramount+, plus there's whatever broadcast TV packages you may subscribe to. But it's a month's entertainment, what's one night out on the lash cost? Not so long ago I was at whatever the Manchester Arena is called these days, I bought two pints of Fizzypish lager and a lemonade, it cost over £20 (and I was still sat there later going "do you want another drink?").

Back in the day I used to play World of Warcraft with my then-partner; two subscriptions for a month was something like £15 but I figured, even if we only play once a month, if we do that instead of going to the cinema then it's paid for itself.

With ads presumably. I don't have the patience for ads. I don't watch anything on ITV for that reason.

Same reason I don't watch Youtube on my TV.

BBC, Amazon Prime, and Netlix is more than enough TV content for me anyway.
