Looking for a decent 'cable' for my home made cable camera rig thingy.....
It's to carry a fairly light (300gm) rig, plus a small dslr (maximum).
I've been looking at 'accessory cord' like Here, but a 30m length equates to about £20...
Firstly, would 5mm cord work? I want decent tension, without too much 'bowing' of the cable.
Secondly, if anyone has worthy alternative suggestions (cheaper?) please let rip!
Cheers

washing line? It's pvc covered so smooth and has a steel wire core so won't stretch.

Wire rope?
Lots of nice fittings here: http://www.s3i.co.uk/marine.php
but you can get galvanised non-stainless. The PVC coated might be better or get some polyurethane tubing and run some galvanised up the inside (ensure you get a close fit) to make a quieter system.

Seems cheaper than my original idea... Worth a punt I suppose...

quite a lot of spring/stretch in para-cord due to the weave it has - you'd need to have a good way to tension it.
Tesco do plastic coated steel washing lines for £1.99.
NB I've been trying to shift a part worn PVC inflatable bondage chair - stains will probably wash off. Any use for this application?
Probably wouldn't need 30m of cable if I took you up on that offer, though, would I....!
A few feet would suffice.....

this is quite good... I use it for throwline to pull ropes into trees, but its strong enough to hold high tension and cheap enough that you can try it, and if it fails its not a big deal. Also their delivery is super fast!
Any boat chandlers, windsurf, kitesurf, outdoor shop will have something for that.
To it tension you could try a similar set up to the way they do overhead lines for trains... Tie cord at one end, attach a pulley at the other end, thread cord through pulley, then tie cord to big heavy weight (like a log or something) so the weight is suspended and applying permanent pressure. That way you don't get the problem of trying to tie a knot and keep the cord under tension at the same time...
To tension it I've got ratchet straps for fixing things to the roof rack.....
Will check out the suggestions, thanks,
DrP
You can replicate a pulley by just tying a loop in the rope and threading the other bit through. A bit more friction but it works just the same.
