Here’s a challenge for the oracle that is STW…
I’m in the process of clearing out my elderly parents house and come across a haul of old cine films and projector that my Dad shot of us all in the 60’s and 70’s, I know I can get them converted but there’s so many it would cost a fortune and a lot of them probably aren’t worth doing, however, there will be some pearls amongst them (only to my family).
The problem I’ve got is the films fit on the spindle of the front where it feeds into the projector, but the rear spindle is thicker and none of the spools fit onto it, I can run the film directly onto the rear spindle itself, but it runs the risk of the film ending up like a big pile of unviewable film spaghetti.
In a nutshell, i need a spool to fit on the larger rear spindle, does anyone know what I should be asking for to get the right size?
I'm sure there's plenty of experts on https://8mmforum.film-tech.com/vbb/
You'll need a similarly sized spool. We've got big 16mm of FIL's and some smaller 8mm. We're going to have to buy a used 8mm projector to view/record the films. His 16mm projector was new(ish).
My plan is to project onto a screen then film it with one of the digital SLR's - it will be good enough to preserve it
Ebay is the best bet - I can get a serviced 8mm projector for about £60. PS projectors are usually tied to the particular film size ! Should be plenty of bare reels on ebay.
Cheers guy’s, so I’m guessing it’s a 16mm spool I need then Fossy?
The front spindle is also the larger size but has an adapter to use both!

The trick here I suspect will be matching the projection and digital SLR recording framerates otherwise you might get some curious results.
