My mum wants to replace her laptop and I think a chromebook might be a good option for her. She wants to make an informed decision for herself - she’s not super tech savvy but she can generally get stuff to work.

All of my Googling has lead me to sites that seem to be advertorial, or at least heavily ‘chromebooks are great, windows is crap’. Does anyone know of any good impartial sources I can send her towards to help her make a choice?

Thanks

We bought my Mum one for Christmas.

She's been using an ancient Samsung tablet for years, it's now so clunky and slow, unsupported by Android updates and half the apps no longer work. She's also complained about it being difficult to read due to the relatively small screen.

She doesn't need any of the Office stuff so we suggested a Chromebook and after some searching online, found this:
https://www.johnlewis.com/hp-chromebook-x360-14a-ca0006na-laptop-intel-pentium-silver-processor-8gb-ram-64gb-emmc-storage-14-inch-full-hd-touchscreen-mineral-silver/p5392189

Good combination of price, features etc and it was delivered with no hassle on NYE. OK, both my sister and I have had several video calls with her when she's phoned to ask about something or other to do with it but she's got the hang of it quickly having always used Android phones and tablets.

Thanks for your thoughts. I’m really after a decent article she can read so she can decide for herself. She gets enough being told what to do by my sister 😀

The few John Lewis branches in I've been to in the last few months have all had a small range of of Chrome Books out to try. Their sales staff are generally well informed too and would doubtless give your mum honest advice about the pro's and con's of them.

I bought one recently as a result of advice on here and quite satisfied .. I use it for little more than browsing , video calls with relatives etc . It's a bit confusing at first and although I am experienced with android I did find it a little confusing at first as quite a few things are unique to chromebooks and so I tend to learn on an as needed basis. I also researched and not wanting to spend a great deal but wanting a decent screen resolution and a reasonable size unit I went for Acer chromebook 314 from J.Lewis which was reduced by £50 at the time came with 2 yr warranty had good reviews and the version they sell which is back to £299 also has a touchscreen . After a few months of use it's not left me wanting is light and offers 10 hr + battery life . Together with an amazon fire tablet bought on black friday and modded to accept google play etc that's all I use. Oh ..it probably won't affect your mum but sideloading non google play apps on a chromebook takes a bit of sorcery but can be done ..even by a relative IT novice like myself.
SORRY ..just seen recommendations are not what you wanted ... but it might help someone else anyhow .

If you're a Costco member, you could just buy one and let them try it.
If they don't like it, you have 90 days to return it for your money back for any reason.
