If you could have any car you wanted, on the basis of you using it for your own purposes, what would you get? Assume second-hand, and NOT a supercar...

I was just looking at autotrader for fun, and think I would love to get something like a VW Caddy (or another version of one of those mini white-van type things), and do it up with a small bed in the back, together with some kind of mount for my bike. With a good set of tyres on one of those, I figure I could use it to travel all over Europe, either by myself, or with Mrs SR.

I wouldn't want to go full camper, but maybe something like this:

[img] [/img]

Similar suggestions along such lines to dream about would be welcome. As would your own "fantasy vehicle". So what'll it be?

Second hand. Not a super car, it's a grand tourer. Newport Pagnell perfection.  Number 7 of 40. For sale now.

If only one, then I'll have a Legacy Spec B or JDM spec GT please.

If two, then I'll have a HC Viva or Firenza, a small block V8, a proper garage and a limitless amount of time, sheet steel and welding wire. And a Transit Custom

I don't really care for all the interior guff, but the paint, whitewalls and wheel trims just work. If I had the money, I would.

I would like a comfortable 4 wheel drive van - preferably hybrid.  Eight seats - front swivelling, good luggage space and with some decent in car entertainment for music and video.  Don’t care what make or model, as long as drives well, reliable with good reliability and build quality.  Oh and lots of soundproofing so it is quiet at motorway speeds. Adjustable suspension would be nice too!

Moon on a stick!

Yup, Rangy for me (ditto the someone else paying for service), but it would need a lot of custom modifications (roo bar, underbody armour, long range tank and rear mount for 2x spare wheels). Sadly none of these things have been available for the rangy since the P38.

Black Porcha Carrera 4x4, the early rare one with the wing.

Oddly enough i found myself looking at 150,000 mile RS4’s on Autotrader last night going for just a little more money than the final purchase of the pcp on the daily. 😀  moneypits, im sure... but maybe for a year...

In reality I would probably opt for a T5/6 camper but these look like they have potential too.

Citroen Relay Based Type H conversion.

I quite fancy one of them Honda Odyssey’s.

looks about the right size for biking/car bivvying.

It even has an integral vacuum,

Pity they only seem to be available in North America.

hmm, my niece starts working for Honda Ohio in the summer. Wonder what her employee discount is like.... 🚐

The last 69 Boss 429

Look at it!

Officially rated at 375bhp, but probably over 600bhp at 9000rpm pushing them to 175mph

I like these old Peugeot 505s

The 504 cabriolet is lovely too, Pinafarina designed:

I also really like the Alfa 156 GTA Sportwagon:

None of these would be ridiculously expensive to buy, £10k or less

Of those shown above, the OP’s choice or the Berlingo. Wouldn’t mind a Routemaster bus like in Summer Holiday/ The Young Ones, if someone else was doing the driving.

Seeing the Citroen that bikebuoy posted up, I’ve been fantasising about one of those, but with a 1.6 Citroen engine putting out around 120bhp and a full 4x4 conversion, with nice grippy tyres. Put a roll-cage in, and an exoskeleton to give extra rigidity and occupant protection, it would be a blast on narrow lanes, B-roads and off-road like the Ridgeway and byways.
A Type-H with updated running gear, 4x4 conversion and a nice interior for camping and festivals would be nice as well.

Volvo L3314 "Laplander"just like this one, maybe with an electric motor conversion.

http://www.vibilagare.se/klassiska-bilar/buss-pa-ryssen

I keep watching the Swedish sites in case on finally comes up in the right condition, location and price to make it half feasible to bring back to UK. Also need some clean dry space to store and work on it.

Or 2CV van with Louis Barbour 4x4 conversion and Quaife diff.

Well you can tune an R100 boxer to 100bhp.. I think that’s plenty in Le Frog.

I wish I kept my very first company car, I had the option to buy it.. an all white 2cv with 4 large green frogs on it.. but I ended up passing it over for one of these:

Boring as it may seem, but if I was going to have 1 car to do everything for the foreseeable future it would have to be a nice 3 series touring, X Drive as a nod to practicality. Auto too please.

Not or too fussed on the engine either, as long as it’s 2014 onwards, and is a 320 or upwards.

Tesla S for a day to day car, Alfa GT Junior looks lovely but I think I'd be disappointed by it's 1970s fit and performance.

Transit Custom for bike duties.

MetroVR6 for a laugh.

I’d settle for dans Vw caddy custom build with 370bhp and the running/braking gear to match, the interior is none too shabby for a van either ,  https://caddy2k.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=12081&sid=734a16d8a7d85dfb06785e6bcd72334b , long thread to trawl through so jump through it if you are in anyway interested in vans #sadsack club

I was fortunate enough to be in a position last year to buy any car I wanted.
Lots of the stuff I thought I wanted turned out to be disappointing. Aston’s were poo, boxter was meh.
M3/M4 too .... bmw.

I went wide of the mark and picked up an Audi RS Q3p. It does everything so well - quick with 375 bhp.
Handles well, 4x4 for the alps and snow. Enough room for two bikes in the car + gear.

I drove from geneve to Dublin and back avg of 33mpg. So not to bad considering the performance.
5 cylinder warble is cool 😎

I like the Routemaster bus as suggested above - heading off to the seaside for the day.

Complete with Cliff Richard singing some tunes up on the top deck and a bar on the lower deck serving a selection of fine Belgium beers.

Anyone else fancy getting a modest car and having it stripped down and rebuilt with custom components,  top stereo, loads of sound insulation, interior carefully reassembled and stuck together tightly etc?

Or are you all just about the speed?

It changes for me.

I've always wanted a 32 Ford Deuce high boy hotrod.

I'm a massive VW fan, air and water cooled.

I like big old mercs.

I also like big old Jaaaguars.

Last week itw as a mint S2 XJ Coupe

But if it was a money no object affair, and because I utterly love driving sports cars about, 1974 911 Carrera 2.7 RS Lightweight in white and blood orange.

Tesla X with all the options for me. I don't do a lot of miles, plenty of space in the back with the rear seats out and I'm lazy so having the car mostly drive for me would help. Surprisingly even JC seemed to like it in the latest Grand Tour (I agree it's hideously over-priced).
