If so how much time do you spend on it.

Reason for asking is that I have been offered some space in a big greenhouse - Guernsey is full of huge disused glass houses, a legacy of the tomato growing industry of the 60's and 70's.

I've never really been a keen gardener but the idea of being a grower and growing my own fruit and veg really appeals, for the last couple of weeks we've been watering the plot we have been offered to take over and helping ourselves to onions, potatoes etc and you really can taste the difference.

I'm just worried about how much time I'll need to spend there - anything more than 3-4 hours per week and say 1 day of the weekend and I'm going to struggle due to work commitments.

I used to kep an allotment, and that amount of time is plenty, especially in the more 'controlled' environment of a hot house.

There's a book called something like the half hour allotment. Tells you how to set things up to keep work needed down to 1/2 hour per week day and none at weekends. Supposed to be really good.

I personally spend about 20-30 mins a day watering or weeding, or even harvesting (the best bit)

It's a nice relaxing place away from everything........

Just coming up to my first year of an allotment user.

It varies depending on the time of year and what you are growing and how, obviously.

Digging over the soil was a real slog for me, the plot I had was untouched for over 6 years, you could not walk onto it for brambles!

That took some doing to clear, maybe a week of hard work, but if your plot has been managed you will find it a bit easier

This time of year its about half an hour if that a day watering (green house) then one morning or afternoon at the weekend.

I have 1/32th whic is plenty big enough for me.

If I did not have a green house and was not so anal with the weeding, then I could get away with far less time, but take it from me, once you get started, you will want to spend more time there.

We're just waiting for our official offer, but we're about to become the proud tenants of 150 square meters of allotment.

Not been used in 15 years or so though, so needs some clearing.....

You will be surprised how much other the allotment holders will be up to help you. I was honestly amazed with the amount of help and offers of various motorized contraptions I was offered to clear my forest 😉

Its nearly a weekly occurrence now that plants or produce is left outside my shed for me to make use of.

Share and share alike.

[sat here nibbling on this weeks free offerings of strawberries]

🙂
