Planning a weekend away where I'm hoping to catch a couple of cross races and stay in Antwerp.

I've been once before for work and stayed near the train station, but thought the area was a bit of a dump. I got collected by an ex colleague and taken to an area which had a nice square, cafes, touristy bits etc... but have no idea what this area was called, or where it is!

Anyone know where this is on a map, or can maybe recommend a hotel. Doesn't have to be flash just near to the nicer parts/bars of Antwerp.

I don't know any hotels, but have been to Antwerp a few times, the nice square was probably the Grote Markt. The grotty area by the station was probably the red light district!

I can ask around if you aren't in a hurry, some kids in my daughters class are from Antwerp.

Thanks that would be useful. No particular hurry. We're planning to go to a couple of races at the end of the season (so we're not racing) which are at the beginning of February.

how much are you willing to pay? Just you, or someone special too?

t'Sandt is quite nice, relatively central, but i don't have much idea how it is cost wise compared to others because whenever I stayed there it was with a colleague who had stayed there so often over the previous 20 years that he was almost family.

I've also stayed at the Rubens which is pretty good. But a bugger to find down all the one way streets!!

It's a boys weekend watching CX races and sampling some of the local brews, so we're just really after a bed for the night rather than anywhere s****y.

Although would obviously like it not to be a flea pit!

Couple of places just outside the centre then - chain types (HIE, etc.) would be my bet. Far better rates, and a cheap taxi ride at the end of the night.

Antwerp was our favourite weekend destination when we lived in Holland. Great city.

+1 for the Rubens, but most places around the Grote Markt are pretty good.

Don't miss the mad bar next to the Cathedral which is crammed with religous relics: Het Elfde Gebod http://kathedraalcafe.be/fotos/

Antwerp , great run ashore, had my first tattoo done in the red light area,at 3am , then off to the ZanziBar for drinks till morn, a smorgasbord of debauchery -- great, probably been sanitised now, but antwerp had something for everyone !

Antwerp used to have a massive red light district; we used to go for a wander when we raced over there. It had a chippy right in the middle, which was the main attraction for me. They used to have coach trips of elderly Belgian folk who would wander about and chat to the girls.

It's off the road down by the docks somewhere, which is like saying it's by the Thames in London!

We went to one of the sex shops and were impressed by the range of DVDs on offer, so decided to try to find one which referenced cycling, we did it; a French? film called the yellow jersey about a couple of young gentlemen who cycled through the countryside and well, enjoyed each others company in a barn, with a willing farmhand..
