Hi have inherited the above clock, my question is it had been stored in a damp shed it is in good condition just needs a clean and an oil finish but should I let it acclimatise in the house first ie dry out a bit first before I oil it?. thanks
What an odd first post! Have you asked a clock repairer for advice?
I have had a few of old clocks - no long case but they're all pretty similar.
I'd let the case acclimatise but I'd remove the mechanism first. I'd clean the mechanism and inspect it for any necessary repairs. Then I'd oil it with a very light oil (WD40 works really well) and return it to the case; once the case has acclimatised.
It won't take much more than a couple of weeks for the wood to dry out and return to shape/condition. Then you can check it over, make any repairs and fix the clock in position properly.
