My lockdown 1 bulk buy of my usual L’Oréal men expert anti perspirant is about to run out and ive concluded it’s too chemically, too hard to wash off so goes a bit stale, and makes your pits wet with zero exercise. When I do exercise, fair enough it does work and there’s no smell, but there must be something a bit better and a bit less harsh out there?

What are people using?

I am not a fan of antiperspirants and don’t see the point of lynx type deodorant. For the past number of years I have been using Pitrok, it’s unscented and apparently works by neutralizing the bad bacteria that causes BO. It doesn’t stop you sweating but does stop you smelling. My wife approves too as all I smell of these days is my shower gel or aftershave.

I don't use any or shower gel/soap most of the time). My missus is more than fine with it.

Yep. Do the environmentally responsible thing and ditch them altogether.

I read a thing once that they're linked with lymph node cancer too - but that was long after I ditched them completely.

Wash. If you ming it's generally because you haven't washed properly - including those "bad bacteria" that cause BO. (And if you look at your skin microbiome - it's probably damaged through chemical use - so deodorant use can *make* you smell bad).

And if none of that shit convinces you - your skin biome is actually part of your immune system - so treat it more kindly, you'll be less ill:

I uses the woman's roll on. Far better neutral, such as Cotton Fresh, type fragrance, and lots of anti marking ones out there.

As to brand, Nivea, Vaseline, etc, not to be found much difference.

Combine with regular soap for a nice smelling, low plastic, efficient and easy life. Shower gel is the best work of all the devil. 90% just does down the plug and smells of stuff I don't want to smell of!

My missus is more than fine with it.

I recently switched to a roll on after realising how much spray on deodorant I must have inhaled after a lifetime of spraying it near my face every single day!

Now to be fair @bearnecessities what I’ve found by not using deodorant is that it’s far easier to keep the pits clean. There’s no smell that needs masking an no applied product to scrape off.

There are some variables in that, if you produce bacteria at a rate that they’ll go funky before your next shower your experience may vary. You may also want a product that makes you smell like “THE MAN OF TODAY” but I was barely the man of yesterday so can’t really empathise.

I don't tend to use it for the most part but what I will say to the nay sayers is

Some people HAVE to use it. I mean HAVE to.

I used to sit next to a guy at work. He was my best mates lodger at the time.....

I was told he showered before he left for work.in the morning. By the time he got to the office I'd have said if I was a betting man that he had run from the house to the office and not showered.I know he drove. Some other folk in the office actually complained to the management about the smell and his body hygiene.

Personally I think I'd have gone to the doctors at that point I'm sure he was diabetic

But yeah he needed deodorant....

Aye, I've worked with a few like that, used to play footy with one, he'd get showered and within an hour was rotten again, poor bugger.

“Pfft, I don’t even use soap”

Soap? shower? I roll in dirt with the sparrows man.

antiperspirants-may-actually-make-you-smell-worse/

"may" is doing a lot of heavy lifting here!

Interestingly, it looks as though as the smell is caused by bacteria on the skin that some people have a dodgy mix of them and smell pretty bad fairly quickly. I certainly have to wash and use anti perspirant.

However, for people with a really bad deal can fix it with a bacterial transplant. Lots of anti vac washing to strip off what is there and then swabbing it across from someone luckier to establish new, less smelly, colonies. Fecal transplants and now this! The body biome is a crazy thing.

This is going to be a classic STW over complicating things thread isn't it?

Bog standard Sure antiperspirant here, works fine and doesn't smell too strongly. If I'm going to be out and moving all day Sanex roll-on is good but takes a while to dry.

Doesn't smell and only have to apply it once or twice a week

Used this for 20 years now, and it's been brilliant - even on the rare occasion that I have had to crash at someone else's place and not been able to put on fresh stuff the next day.

Deoderant

Think I've got Sure at the moment. Sometimes Nivea. Tends to be whatever is on offer in the supermarket and called Ice Blast or Mega Fresh or something generally a bit minty. Wakes me up as it heads up my nostrils on a morning.

Wife uses this and I'll probably move onto it once I've got through the roll-on I've got. It's difficult to understand the cost for such a small tube though but it works out quite well once you see how long it lasts.

I have the same issue as OP when using the Loreal stuff, it's absolute poop.

Grum - has your missus had a Covid test?

OP - Whatever the "sensitive" one at Lidl is called, works fine for me.

Yes actually! I know many won't believe me but I genuinely reckon I smell better than I did when using shower gel and deodorant/antiperspirant. Things get more ripe/unpleasant much more quickly when using products and then you need to use more.

Also, my missus likes that I smell like a man 😎

Me and my partner have both been using Pitrock for over 6 years. Cheaper, feels nicer and I smell less.

Wash first and then roll on the salt stick and it's great. My brother and sister are also converts to Pitrock.

Wow this went in different directions 🙂

So, it’s not a smell problem. Yes, I think it does leave a residue that builds up and needs scrubbing off, and it does smell stale but not any one would notice.

What I want to eradicate is a. A few minutes after spraying it becomes damp and I hate that - and it transfers to your clothes after time. B. It’s too chemically.

My sweat doesn’t smell unless I sit around after a ride or run before showering and I don’t often do that.

Years ago I used a roll on but you couldn’t put a top on for 30mins or you’ll dampen the pits! Are they better now.

Soap? Think of all the water down the drain when you shower. I don't bother.

Surely a good proportion of the issue is down to your clothes as much as you?

If you're only doing 40 degree washes then it could be the case that you're just re-activating the whiffy bacteria already in your t-shirts rather than it being direct from your skin.  Certainly the case with man-made fibre sports kit!

60 degree washes or one of the sports wash products - Halo, Nikwax BaseWash/Basefresh, etc - will help a lot.

Nope. All my stuff gets washed at 30c with normal (non-bio) detergent and comes out fine. No reactivation either. As above, some folk just seem to smellier than others.

I've use this Dove roll on for the last few years. Seems pretty inoffensive and does the job well.

Mitchum roll on in whatever flavour is on offer. Interested in the more eco freindly options out there. There's a lot of plastic and presumably some fairly nasty chemicals in my current choice.

Whatever roll-on is on offer. Though not liking the large amount of plastic packaging for a relatively small volume of liquid.

they nearly all seem to be water-based these days so take forever to dry unlike the old ‘fresh’ alcohol-based ones.

Pit rok sounds interesting except for its marketing blah blah and it seems to have the same plastic burden as other brands.

What non-spray anti-perspirant/ deodorants are there that eschew plastic packaging in favour of aluminium or paper?

Is there any (reasonable cost) roll-on deodorant that doesn't have the horrid anti-perspirant part to it?

I haven't used any deoderant for decades. My personal grooming consists of Tesco head and shoulders in the shower, brushing my teeth, an electric shaver a few times a week, and a skim over my head with the clippers once a fortnight. My wife reckons I'm some freak of nature who just doesn't smell, or a vampire. I do get smelly after a few days camping/biking in the same clothes.

But generally a shower and fresh clothes does me.

I can't stand any remotely perfumy smells, so have always used unperfumed deodorant... then I took a punt on one of those crystal type ones. No smell, no residue, don't stop the sweat quite as much as a roll-on... but the stick thing lasts FOREVER! Can't recommend enough. Unless you're very sweaty and B.O.-y, then you'll need something stronger (Mitchum roll on is good, though why only the LADIES version is unperfumed is beyond me. Well, it says "LADY" on the label, otherwise it's the same stuff I'd bet).
This typa thing

This. Packaged in glass pot with metal lid. Works, smells ok but not too strongly, doesn't mark my clothes. Looks pricey but a 100ml pot lasts more than 3 months for me. And it's all artisan, perfect STW product.

So irked with the Vinny Jones Brut campaign! I actually do just like the smell, so the brut-brute faux "anti-brand" stance is a right turn-off.

Former Mitcham user here, no complaints but concerned with plastic. Now make my own, it's dead easy to do and my (reusable) glass jar lasts for around 5 months. Recipe here, small quantities of ingredients available from Ebay and you can just leave out essential oil(s).
