Last night while out on the bike I went down a narrow singletrack road, (more of a gravel track to be honest) and I came across a pile of rubbish strewn along the hedge. In among the Coors light bottles and varius food containers and plastics I noticed a few pieces of paper. Some were spam, some were bills, and one was a letter from a secondary schools warning a parent about their son's persistent absenteeism.
The route I take crosses the border between the Republic of Ireland and NI roughly five times. I found the rubbish in the Republic of Ireland, about 6 miles from the owners house in Derry/LDerry Northern Ireland. It should also be noted that there is a large recycling centre, also in the North, 1.6 miles from the addresses on the dumped letters.
Now I've yet to speak to my b.i.l who is a Garda Sgt, but I doubt there'd be much they could do since the offender is in the North. And I really doubt the PSNI will dedicate too much man power to people fly tipping in the south.
The obvious nuclear option here is to go full bombers, bag it up and go throw it at the house. Or I could launch some kind of Facebook doxing I suppose. Or I could do nothing and start a thread here.
Anyway....what would singletrackworld do and how can people be such **** *s?

I like the Facebook option. Name and shame! What about informing your local council though? In my head, your local council would clear up the mess and bill the cross border council for the costs, who would then pursue the original fly tipper? At least, that's what the voices in my head are telling me would be a sensible approach.

Zero chance. It's not even a back road. It's lane. And it would also require cross border recycling lorries, and there are none.

Yeah. Then what if they catch my reg and I get reported for illegal dumping 😕 Which would be just typical. Another option would be just simple note through the letter box. I'm not sure what that would accomplish.

I wonder would they. Most likely the dumper gets away with it and tax payers foot the bill.

I had similar, though no borders were involved (a thread on here was!) where I found a receipt amongst a load of building stuff. I reported it but gave the wrong location! Duh. But the council did follow up.
So I posted a review on the builder's Check-a-trade page saying they were fly-tippers.

I did something similar with Facebook.
I am an admin for NWMBA and came across some dumped waste on a bridleway outside of Nercwys. Published the pictures on our FB page with the name and address. Our local Rights of way enforcement officer saw the pictures and the culprit was named and shamed and eventually fined.
They blamed a 3rd party waste removal firm but the responsibility is that of the householder.

Alright, bag it up, dump it north of the border in the culprit's council area with the name and address details prominent, then report it as a flytip with identifiable material in it!
Well, spoke to the brother in law. He said in his experience the litter warden for County Donegal has no power to enforce cross border fines and he had experienced several such incidents just fizzling out.
He also said that he had personally confronted a repeat cross border fly tipper and threatened him with arrest (which he can't actually do for dumping but nevermind that).
After some enquiring he discovered that the "gentleman" in question was actually running a business collecting people's rubbish in a car trailer and dumping it illegally across the border in Donegal.
I guess it's not entirely beyond the realms of possibility that the person who's details are on these letters was availing of the same kind of service, possibly even the same operator.
The b.i.l also advised transporting the rubbish across the border and reporting it to Derry council as the only viable course of action 😐
