Firstly sorry for another phone question, I havent really kept up to date with phone technology the past few years.

So, my contract has finished and I was planning on going sim free but my current phone, iPhone 5, is playing up so it's time to get a new one. But I'm not paying the £30 plus/month for a new iphone when I dont use a phone enough to warrent paying that.

What is there at the cheaper end of the market? What are Nokia/Windows phones really like? I am looking for something with 4G, around 1GB data and just calls and texts. I don't use a lot of minutes as mainly email. Ideally something less than £20 would be perfect.

Any recommendations?

What's up with the iPhone? Take it to Apple, they might fettle it for you if you ask nicely.

Its crashing a lot and the battery is knackered with only holding charge for 12 hours max, so it would cost just as much to get fixed and I still have the cost of minutes/data etc on top

I changed the battery on my daughter's iPhone 4S just last week - took me about 5 minutes in total. (AFAIK the iPhone 5 is similar). The battery cost less than a tenner on eBay, and came with the tools you needed.

Motorolo Moto G - the pimp daddy of budget phones. We just bought three for work for a grand total of £104 each. 4g, pretty quick, everything works smoothly. Only downside seems to be a pretty average camera.

I have a Sony Xperia. It is a bit shit. Connectivity and battery life are OK, but other features are not as good as my old Samsung.

Dirt cheap though.

OnePlus One

Flagship spec, mid range pricing.

https://oneplus.net/uk/one

Pop a three or EE PAYG/Sim-Only sim in for 4G (3G for everyone else)

😀

One Plus One as above or Motorola Moto X - both on sale, both brilliant high end phones being marked down to make way for 2015 models.

Edit: If you're considering Windows the 640 is getting great reviews, £130 from Carphone Warehoose

You could take it back to apple for a battery service, £59 get a full reset done (they might just replace the phone anyway) and then just get a decent sim only plan? iPhone 5 still more than current.

Crashing and diminished battery life? TBH, I'd try a factory reset before you do anything else.

I thought about taking back to Apple but tbh I would quite like 4G which I can't get on the current phone due to O2 deciding not to support if when they brought the iPhone 5 out

Was in this situation too. Get the old 4g moto g for around £90 from tesco with cash back. Online doesn't have it so you will have to find one in a store. If that fails buy the new one but if you can find an old one they are better vfm.

If you don't mind being on O2 and can live with having 99% of the apps out there the Amazon Fire phone is £99 for both the 32 & 64gb versions

What's the difference between the old and new?

I have looked at the Fire phone but not heard a lot about it, that may not necessarily be a bad thing though, 64gb would be nice 🙂

How good/bad are Windows phones now? Some of the Nokia Lumia look quite nice and it would be good linking outlook etc up with it.

I've just switched to a "budget" phone, a Moto G 4G. I bought it from here:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Motorola-5-Inch-Generation-SIM-Free-Smartphone/dp/B00UJAP24A

I don't know why i didn't do it sooner, this phone seems fine to me. Even the camera is pretty decent, and it has accepted my 64gb MicroSD without a problem (despite saying only 32gb are supported). Nice big 5" screen for watching iPlayer etc too

The first Amazon review describes the difference between the versions:
- Version 1 Moto G: 3G, single-SIM, 4.5in HD screen, 8GB/16GB storage (XT1032 - released in 2013)
- Version 2 Moto G: 4G, single-SIM, 4.5in HD screen, 8GB storage (XT1039 - released in June 2014)
- Version 3 Moto G: 3G, dual-SIM, 5in HD screen, 8GB storage (XT1068 - released in September 2014)
- Version 4 Moto G: 4G, single-SIM, 5in HD screen, 8GB storage (XT1072 - released in March 2015)
