Picture the scene.......

Mr P is bumbling home from work on his bike, whistling and waving at pedestrians, that sort of thing. I eventually approach the right hand, completely blind bend near my house.

I do my usual and pull out a bit further in to the road to avoid utter dickheads overtaking. Two seconds later there’s a van about an inch from my rear wheel. Driver just holding the horn down. Like I actually needed an audible clue other than the engine noise right behind me.

I clear the bend and as captain anger overtakes closely I point at the pavement to our left. He pulls over so I step off the bike. An angry man steps out of the van. At first I thought he had parked far away then it dawned on me that he was just really small. His opening line was

“What the hell are you doing. You’re supposed to ride your bike right next to the pavement, not in the middle of the lane”

I just laughed at him for a bit. What the hell are you supposed to respond to that with? I eventually settled for “I did that to stop you from killing yourself or somebody else by overtaking on a blind bend”

I should have just ignored him, but Jesus, what is wrong with some people? I rang the missus to proudly proclaim I’d had an altercation with a driver that didn’t end with swearing, vehicular damage or fisticuffs. Finally I am beginning to mature,

Sorry if you read all that.

Well done. Whenever I hear the frustrated beep of a driver behind me (not actually that often, thankfully) I actually just translate it to applause in my head as it means I've stopped someone performing a dangerous overtaking manoeuvre and potentially just saved my life!

I think you already knew that, hence the invitation to dance. 🙂

There's a set of blind bends on my local loop where I regularly get overtaken despite usually taking primary. With hilarious consequences. Driving standards are poor in North Yorkshire.

Don't thing you are being singled out, they are poor everywhere.

It never ceases to amaze me how many drivers seem to be in such a tearing hurry that they have to overtake a cyclist on a blind bend, yet still manage to be able to afford the time to have a roadside argument about it for five minutes afterwards.

I would have asked him to explain the problem again, as you were having a little difficulty understanding it.

It’s disgraceful behaviour like this from cyclists that forces me to drive on the pavement

As long as you’re indicating correctly and not overtaking on blind bends then you go for it.

Woman nearly t-boned me earlier this eve in Rowland’s Castle. She pulled out of a junction without looking & only just stopped in time.

She then wound down the window & gave me loads of abuse so I nipped in front & proceeded in my lowest gear all the way through the village in the middle of the single lane road at about 6 mph. She just sat behind me revving her engine & leaning on the horn before eventually turning off at the roundabout at the outskirts of said village.

Ruined my average speed but not as much as she could have done.
