y=arccosx

differentiate to show that dy/dx=-(1-x^2)^-0.5

cosy=x

dx/dy=-siny

dy/dx=-1/siny

=-1/sin(arccosx) <--- where to go from here??

Or am I on the complete wrong track.

y = arccos(x)
x = cos(y)
dx/dy = -sin(y)
= -sqrt(1 - cos^2(y))
= -sqrt(1 - x^2)
dy/dx = -1/sqrt(1 - x^2)

I should know this - I did a maths degree FFS!
Think you might be on the wrong track there, and you want something along the lines of sin^2 + cos^2=1 (that kinda thing). But I could be well wide of the mark (embarassingly)

And, where it says 'show your working', link to this page. "my working involved asking the stw massif for their answers"

That's the trick Jerome, cheers. Seems obvious now.

Wow, I'm surprised that both
1) I used to know this stuff
and
2) I can still recognise enough to know I used to know it!

glenh sorry but this is mostly the basic stuff that I've forgotten cause I've concentrated too much on the complicated stuff. Maybe you would like to try something harder..? 😀
