If the wearing of a helmet whilst riding on the public highway was made compulsory by law, would it reduce the amount of riding you do?
Please, no further debate on the rights and wrongs, etc., just an indication of whether it would alter your time spent on a bike or not.
No, it would not.
By "public highway" do you mean just roads, or also bridleways, BOATs, cycle paths etc?
Anyway, put me down as a "No"
I don't currently wear a helmet for my commute, but I would if I had to.
Nope
no, not at all especially as it is legal over here in Oz.
No, but I might organise a protest group.
Yes.
Avoid roads as much as possible, so nope for me.
(I can see the flaw in this argument already, but I'm saying nowt)

Yeah, I'm thinking roads and cycle lanes rather that byways, bridleways & cycle paths.
I'd just ride on pavements instead. Do I win?
No (but I think you are missing the point)
50/50
No but..
How would the law be implemented?
Would you also implement a law to enforce carrying identification.
Or would the police be able to impound the bike and leave you miles from anywhere with no transport?
Would be interested to know how it works in OZ BTW.
Riding my own bikes - no. I always wear a helmet anyway.
Riding Boris Bikes - yes. I wouldn't cart a helmet into London on the off chance I wanted to use a bike.
No. I'd get a cheaper helmet for the pub/beer/pie run.
If the wearing of a helmet whilst riding on the public highway was made compulsory by law, would it reduce the amount of riding you do?
No. I'd just ignore the rule if I didn't want to wear one for some reason.
nope I already always wear one
I'm with PP, I'd carry on doing what I want - no doubt the CTC would organise non-helmet wearing 'civil disobedience' protests. I'd love to see them try and enforce helmet compulsion in a big city. And during critical mass....?
no I nearly always wear one anyway.
Theoretically yes - the little jaunts to the shop, or to return a DVD, wouldn't happen. But like some others, I'd probably just break the law.

This
nb IIRC in New Zealand you get an on the spot fine. But as we don't do on the spot fines, not sure how any law would be enforced.

Very well, actually. People put helmets on before riding their bikes. Simple really.
No difference to me
No. But you are asking a bunch of generally helmet-using folk who are happy to be seen in cycling gear, rather than joe bloggs who has a mild pot-belly and wants to go to work and not look a fool in front of his BMW owning mates.
rather than joe bloggs who has a mild pot-belly
You're putting your helmet on wrong if it enhances your belly
Knew I was doing something wrong!

+ 1
Big road rides or MTB'ing i wear one anyway
But as we don't do on the spot fines
Police regularly issue fixed penalty notices for cycling on Brighton Seafront. IF they're satisfied they can identify you then they just give you the ticket.
How many people here don;t do any road riding before/during/after an off road one?
I'd wear the helmet and cycle on road as much as I do now. Main reason I don;t is 'cos I'm lazy not because I feel it's my 'right'.
No, but I'd probably ignore it on occasion, like I sometimes use a mobile when driving and sometimes speed. If I got nicked for it, so be it, my tough $h1t.

Participate in a spontaneous celebration, surely?
😉
No. But you are asking a bunch of generally helmet-using folk who are happy to be seen in cycling gear,
And that would be the obvious flaw.
You're asking cyclists. People keen enough on cycling to spend part of their day reading an internet forum about cycling.
Those are not the people that would be put off cycling by helmets.

No, but I might organise a protest group.
I would let an informal "celebration" group not organise itself.
Much more hipster way of doing it.
