Just found out that JD Souther has died, which makes me very sad. I bought one of his early albums in 1978, ‘Black Rose’, after reading an excellent review in NME, of all places. He was never that well known, but he wrote and co-wrote a bunch of hit songs with The Eagles, Linda Ronstadt and others.
I had the great pleasure to meet him when he played a little venue in Bristol, which he could afford to do, because royalty cheques let an artist do that.
I took my CD and original vinyl copy of ‘Black Rose’ and when I took them out of my bag and asked if he minded signing them, his face lit up, he was chuffed to bits that someone actually had them, I was the only person there who had them.
A really lovely man, and a real gentleman.
RIP, JD, you’ll be greatly missed.
