What do you pay and what do you get?
1 typical family hatchback
1 LWB Van
National recovery
Homestart
Greenflag quoted me £65 ish for a 11 year old Focus with national recovery, and callout to home added another £20 or so. IME they tend to be cheapest it's just my car's getting on, it used to be about £45 with home call outs!
And as they often use a local garage rather than their own van there's more likelihood of being able to get something major fixed if I don't want it towed home rather than ring round trying to find somewhere open.
Just delaying it until payday which is tempting fate!
autoaid. about £40 per year, includes me and the missus....

we really need to get off the RAC, I think for 2 people (not vehicles), home start and get you home its something like £150

this
Green Flag was just over £70 I think and that was for 2 cars, 1 new, 1 12 years old. There's 3 of us drive them so need car rather than individual cover. Used them twice and they've been very good.
I have green flag via my insurance, £60 relay, windscreen and keys but no homestart because I don't really need it. (if nothing else, I can push my car off the drive and roll it down the hill...).
AA was more expensive but I have to say worth it, I had drivers spend waaaay longer than they should have with me, and also offer really helpful advice or better service than you'd expect (like, one time I broke down close to home so they delayed the turnout and called me when they were onsite so I could ride over and meet them). RAC unless they've improved a lot have good drivers but terrible central control.
I just switched to Start Rescue, was £73 (can't remember what options I took now but a few). Just changed from RAC who wanted £140 (automatic renewal), £35 of that was "admin fee" which made we decide there and then to change without even asking them for a discount first.
I've only called them out once in 10 years and that ended up me waiting 3 hours (starting around midnight) for a local guy to arrive (who couldn't do anything, I'd already told them it wouldn't jump start).
An alternative suggestion (that in true STW style you didn't ask for). See if this is included in the chargeable benefits on your bank account and if the other stuff that you get makes it good value for money.
I get reasonable cover for van and car + 2 iPhones insured + family travel insurance for £14/month from NatWest. No way I could purchase all that individually for the money.
I agree with what tthew recommended. Bundled bank account.
Nationwide flexplus as a joint account gives us full European breakdown for both cars; worldwide family travel insurance inc Winter sports; Up to 5 phones insured and pays 3% on first 2.5k
Can't buy that lot for the £13 they charge monthly.
See if this is included in the chargeable benefits on your bank account and if the other stuff that you get makes it good value for money.
I had breakdown cover on my bank account when I was paying for the privilege of having one. The breakdown cover relay was only covered for 10 miles from the pick up point which was pretty useless.
Last week I got stung for £140 with the RAC.Auto renewal,no reminder just a
auto debit for £140.Needless to say I've cancelled the auto debit after the event & I'm not planning on using them ever again..
My motorcycle insurance, Carole Nash includes free recovery for the bike,do any car insurance policies do something similar?
do any car insurance policies do something similar?
It's normally an optional add on when you take out the policy...but can be beaten/bettered by the likes of Autoaid.
I was with the RAC for years and had good service when needed it but had a major fall out with then after they refused to come out to me as I use my car for my job.
Gone to the AA who will cover me for work as well. It's about £15 per month, covers car, van, onward travel, my mum is on the policy as well. Home start, relay, etc.
Used them a couple of months ago and the guy spent ages with the car going through everything.
RAC cut my renewal quote by 3/4 when I said I was leaving. AA by comparison offered me £2.50 off as a goodwill gesture.
Autoaid don't cover vans.... Green flag here for my t5, but I didn't look too far to be fair
We have two vehicles covered individually on Start Rescue. Level 3 cover which includes cover at home. Cost £28 for 5 yr old Octavia and £34 for 10 year old Micra.
My wife called them out last month when I was in the USA as the Micra was making a horrendous noise on her way to the supermarket. Call centre stated someone would be there within the hour (evening rush hour) arrived in 45 mins. Identified cause as loose heat shield on exhaust due to corroded screws. Removed it. Advised wife the car was safe to use for short distances without heat shield. On her way.
Which recommended for 2016. Why pay more?

I'm always with one of the big companies, have tried others before but service has not been as good when I've needed it. Try topcashback (other cashback places I guess do the same) for some great deals. Takes a while to come but mine was about 60quid this year after cashback with the AA.
I also pay £30, but no home start. Rac always price match
RAC kept cranking up the renewal massively so finally ditched them.
Bank deals, Barclays do their travel pack with breakdown (RAC?) and travel insurance inc winter sports. Only problem is their winter sports excludes "off piste" without a guide. Vague about what they consider off piste. Thing is I ski in North America often and over there they have a lot of stuff that isn't on a groomed piste but is definitely patrolled and within boundary, perfectly legit so long as not closed off due to conditions. Unsure if that would be disallowed. Also travel insurance rules out mountain bike trips as it doesn't cover a dedicated bike trip, only riding during a general holiday.
Affects whether I want to cough up for it to get the breakdown as just for the breakdown it's not so great value. Including travel insurance it is.
I get home start through my local garage however as part of service.
Greenflag used to be good if you had a reliable, newish car as they underwrite the car, not the driver.
AA and RAC offer the same sort of thing I think.
I get ‘free’ Recovery and Home start by having my car serviced at the main dealer, not sure who provides the the cover though, never had to call them.
As an aside is Homestart worth it these days? Car sort of work or they don’t these days and if they don’t they’ll need a sensor or part or something won’t they?
Took out personal cover with AA national recovery and onward travel included via Quidco. Paid up front but after rebate cost me £59.

As about 50% of journeys start there if it's going to not start anywhere it's most likely to be there, at which point you need a tow to a local garage.
