Lets see what the discerning, chin-stroking, denizens of good taste that comprise this forum have been listening to this year then?
1. Favourite tune
2. Favourite album
3. Best gig
I'll start then...
1. BC Camplight - I'm desperate. Just because its so refreshingly bonkers
2. The album it came off - Deprtation Blues beccause it seems to contain a mish mash of pretty much everything, all done brilliantly
3. Could quite easily be a clean sweep for BC Camplight. Saw him a few times this year and he's brilliant live. But just pipped by Gomez at the Albert Halls in Manchester - 20th anniversary show of Bring It On. An absolutely awesome gig in what I think is the best venue in the world, which I went too with all my old uni mates from BITD!
Lets have yours then, you lovely lot.....
1) Bells and Circles - Underworld ft Iggy Pop
2) Joy as an Act of Resistance - Idles
3) Idles at the Wardrobe as part of the Live at Leeds festival
This no good to ya - "Best of the Year 2018" ?
I like Estrons.
Album is cracking.
Lots of good tracks, Body is great.
Not sure I've been to a gig this year, but have tickets for Bob Mould, Stereophonics and (Eddie Izzard) for 2019.
Cheers Dezzy Baby! I'd missed that one
Still trying to think of 1 track. But can't narrow it down.
Idles, Danny Nedelko for track of the year. Just so infectious, a classic summer indie-pop banger. And, from what I've heard of the rest of Idles stuff so far, pretty much unique for them.
(OK, no clue how to link to videos now)
Album: not sure yet.
Gig: there were a few. Gomez playing Bring It On (plus other selected highlights) was excellent. Paul Simon was fantastic, especially if it really is his last tour.
But best of the best was Toots and the Maytals. A Friday night, huge crowd in a great venue, amazing band and show.
Are we sticking it all in this hole, or using the other hole ?
As mentioned, I struggled in the previous thread but this is where my head is and he’s a great DJ and this remix release is from 2018..

Best Album - Anaal Nathrakh - A New Kind Of Horror
So many Best tracks to choose from, Anaal Nathrakh, Ishahn, Sleep, Dimmu Borgir, Immortal, Rivers Of Nihil, Behemoth et al have all released amazing albums but this weeks best track is, Yob - The Screen
How do you do video links nowadays
Just paste URL Bimbler, no tags.
Best tune ..La Chinga : Killer Wizard ..any track that starts with an opening line of " Im the master of disaster ..what you want you bastards ..is ok in my book..makes me smile and takes me back 40 years ..plus there is a killer guitar solo
near the end
Album:The Pineapple Thief : Dissolution..stand out track : White Mist ( The Magpie Salute album a close second )
Gigs :only got to one at the very end of 2017..Ed Banger & The Nosebleeds ..
Would have loved to have gone to see a few bands not least the Steven Wilson gig at The Sage in Gateshead ..but just didn't have the time ..
I'll also go with Danny Nedelko. Favourite album has been Wide Awake by Rayland Baxter. I saw The Magpie Salute in Glasgow last week, I think it's my only gig this year but it was superb, Marc Ford and Rich Robinson expert guitar weaving
Here follows 7 tracks what I've whittled down. I'm sure you'll like one of them... 🙂
Best tune - In Walks Barberella by Clutch. Or Hot Bottom Feeder by Clutch just because it’s a recipie for crab cakes and they are the only band that could get away with that. Argh, or Never fight a man with a perm by Idles.
Album - Can’t narrow down to one.
Always a tough one to narrow them down .
Tune... It's a draw between Bodys by Car Seat Headrest (2018 re-issue) and Great by Idles ,just because I haven't tired of listening to them when they come round on my commute playlist
Album... Idles - Joy as an Act of Resistance
Gig... St Vincent at the Playhouse in Edinburgh .She is one awesome human.
Track of the year - a highly unoriginal - Danny Nedelko or i can't seem to get this out of my head at the moment, Smoko by the Chats:
Album - another one for Joy as an act of resistance - that mix of anger, energy and actually having something to say takes me back to my first favourite band at 15 years of age, Rage Against the Machine.
Gig - Either Sleaford Mods or seening leftfield play the whole of Leftism live was ace
Idles for the album.
Ian Brown for the single.
And of course, HMHB.
Hedge is the best thing they've done since CSI Ambleside.
I've been on an electronic music voyage this year. Which has been great, but doesn't translate too well to "album of the year" type threads! 🙂
Album: Alva Noto - Unieqav
Track: Barker - Look how hard I've tried (from the Debiasing EP, which is all awesome).
Gig: didn't go to any! However, the night / morning I spent in Donau Techno in Vienna (when I was there for a conference) was great.
Double Negative by Low was the only "band" album I really liked this year.
Single: Sinnematic - Zimmz
Album: Singularity - Jon Hopkins
Gig: Underworld (might actually have been late 2017)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oTJwEdeoadU
Tune? White Star Liner by Public Service Broadcasting;
Album? Singularity by John Hopkins;
Gig? toss up between Fat White Family, King Creosote or the Chameleons.....I'll go with King Creosote
Always a tricky one but I think it’s these
Tune ... not strictly this year but it was new to me a couple of gigs ago
Album .... probably.. On Hold by Fenn Lily.. saw her on impulse at The Brudenell in Leeds and loved the set so bought the LP
Best gig .... This ones the easiest ... Public Service Broadcasting at The Royal Albert Hall .... a fantastic night closed off with a Welsh Male Voice Choir in full voice
I forgot I'd seen King Creosote this year. Accordian trance.
Track - Little Simz, Offense
Album - Kamasi Washington, Heaven & Earth
Gig - Kate Rusby at Bath Forum last week
Tough choice:
Album: I’m torn between The Temperance Movement’s “A Deeper Cut” and the Virginmarys’ “Northern Sun Sessions”.
Gig: probably has to be the Virginmarys in Macclesfield on Tuesday night.
Track- need to think about that some more.
Hell...how did that one pass me by ..love The Virginmarys and hadn't realised they had released an album this year ....
Divides & King of Conflict are both brilliant albums ..off to listen to the new album now..
Also noticed they are gigging in Newcastle in Feb ..might just have to get myself along
Track:
Or
Album:
Idles: Joy...obvs, Marlowe: Marlowe, Khruangbin: Con Todo El Munro, Parquet Courts: Wide Awake, Ross from Friends: Family Portrait.
Gig: Either DJ Foods tribute to Aphex Twin or Mercury Rev doing Deserter’s Songs in a church.
Apologies...very indecisive.
Hodgynd- the new VM’s album has only been out a couple of weeks
Vickypea..listened to it last night straight after posting ( Spotify) ..liked it on first hearing which is always a good sign ..
Album-The Waters and The Wild by Ninebarrow.
Track- The Educated Man by Seth Lakeman
Gig- Hard one to call but probably either Seth Lakeman at the Wedgewood Rooms or The Levellers at Winchester Cathedral, both amazing gigs.
For me it has to be 1 artist but 2 versions of the same songs...
1st is all pop and dance style, great for cycling to 🙂
2nd is an acoustic set of mostly the same songs.
Not to bad for a bunch of disc jockeys.....
Best Track: CV313 - Analogue Oceans (Transform). Absolute head messer loud.
Best Album: Harmonia & Eno '76 - Tracks and Traces
Gig: Didn't go to any but 3 x CD recording of Theo Parrish - Thanks to Plastic was on rotation all summer.
I’m adding another...
A late addition is the John Prine album Tree of Forgiveness. Listened to it a lot this last week, a thing of beauty.
..I'm having another go as well then 😁
An album I keep going back to is Claptons sidekick ..Doyle Bramall( the second) ..Shades ..just so laid back man ..
Favourite song, that would be easy: Rosalia - Malamente:
With a phenomenal video to go with it:
I guess the album would have to be her El Mal Querer as the majority of stuff I bought last year was me discovering older stuff I’d missed/new to me. Mind you this was on Agnes Obels LateNightTracks so theoretically this counts...
Didn’t get to any gigs this year, maybe I’m getting to old for that... 🤪
I haven't had any new albums (as in produced in 2018) but new to me it would have to be
Thea Musgrave - Chamber works for Oboe
Best track - a video actually.
Best gig by mile was a celebration of the music of Frank Zappa put on by students of the Royal Northern College of Music under their brilliant head of conducting and Zappa fan Clark Rundell. Great rock band from the rock and pop department and superb windband from the classical department. Spectacular.
