We're considering Annecy for next summer's family holiday (also Dordogne). I already imagine I'd like it but has anyone been? Kids will be 10,8 and 6. Mid July would be when. Looks like the tour will be in the area around then too. Only concern is it'd maybe be too busy. Looking for some suggestions of things to see and do.

I went there on my honeymoon tour but that was a while back and no kids so not sure what I can advise other than it it very pretty and the locals really do eat fondue as confirmed by the two builders on the table next to us one lunchtime.

Seem to remember that we day tripped over to Mont Blanc which was pricey for the cable car but great views across onto the peak.

Ummmm was ok. Bit big and crowded for me. Food average, prices high. Wasn't my favourite place but better than Chamonix

I like Annency for a day...bit of time on the lake swimming, pretty streets to wander eating gelato etc but not sure I'd want to stay there as very busy in summer, busy roads & parking a bit of a mare

Love it been 4 times in the last 5 years!
Very busy in town though, car parking is a bit of a nightmare.
If your booking through Air BnB make sure the place has a parking space with it.
Plenty to do and see in the area as well, not many towns have an HC climb from the town centre.
Couple of years ago we took the bus up Semnoz and MTB'd it back down.
Our youngest went canyoning this year with some friends again very good.
Expensive to eat out and the supermarkets aren't cheap either.

Can I suggest Les Contamines as a base rather than Annecy - its a great valley with swimming lake / sports complex at the top with *tonnes* of stuff for kids of all ages.

there is also great (easy & harder) walking and decent biking from the doorstep. We went there when my daughter was 5ish and will be going back for the fourth time next year.

about 30-45 minutes beyond Annecy

+1 for Contamines - traffic was the biggest bugbear for us - eldest should be big enough for a tandem parapente trip which was fabulous...

Cheers all, we've got a place in mind which is 17km outside of the town. I did think it might get busy. I'll also have a look at Contamines.

I've been in August twice for a couple of days each time on the way to Bike Village. Stayed right on the lake at Talloires so a bit less hectic than the main town. Beautiful, busy, lush food, lovely walks and swimming. Dordogne lovely also. We did a canoeing trip down it a couple of summers ago.

Camped there for a couple of days above the lake. Really beautiful place and was so nice just parking up in a random layby and flinging yourself into the lake in your pants.

Lots of paragliding happening and the town is pretty but yes, quite busy.

Went to Annecy, we'll southern end of the lake, this summer with 2 kids 10 & 8 after a week in Samoens. Loved it. Beautiful place with lots of little beaches lake is amazing for swimming in, lovely and warm. The cycle track up one side of the lake meant that getting about was a piece of piss.

Will deffo go again.

Definitely to be recommended, though both times we've been we stayed at the opposite end of the Lake from Annecy itself. We've camped (Eurocamp both times) with our two boys, 8 and 5 this year, and can't recommend it enough. There's loads to do for a week even without travelling too far. Plenty of great road biking routes but beware high prices for bike rental in that part of the world.
