Ok, mostly when I’m away in some hotel or other with work or sometimes at home without much to do I watch quite a lot of Animated Short Films.
Mostly these consist of comedic or drama basis, sometimes thrillers but all animated. Sometimes used as a pre curse to a film proposal or to showcase artists or animators.
YouTube is the place to find these, not too difficult wading through the vids of car crashes or animals eating cheese so if you’re up for or indeed a fan of, then I’ll start with this..
I think it’s extreemly well made, has won many awards so let’s see what you think .. or indeed show and tell.
The Looking Planet.
Animation you say? This is proper stop frame stuff.
Back in the 90s there was a great Channel 4 night of films called the A to Z of animation that I taped and rewatched until the tape wore out - and this was one of them - Animated depictions of people recounting alien abductions under hypnosis
It’s not big and it’s not clever but I LOVE the Disney shorts. Especially paper man. Nearly made me cry that one.
The funny ones are ok too, but the shorts are the perfect length for proper shmaltz
I love the start of this one, and the middle, it all goes a little bit too bonkers for me at the end though!
Another for the time being, it’s no surprise that the French lead the way in CGI short films..
Yozhik v Tumane (Hedgehog In The Fog)
Classic Russian animation that's absolutely spellbinding.
More on the list...
btw...We love Hedgehog in the fog in our house.. 😀
One for those off to work today, who wonder why they go..
This is a music video (sorry) but beautiful nevertheless....
Bookmarked this thread!
I'm quite enjoying some of the stuff on the Dust youtube channel at the moment (plus some of the shorts recommended off the back of it) - sci fi shorts. Some are a lot better than others, but there're definitely some gems.
I used to keep stuff like this on video, back in the day when it used actually to get shown on TV!
Uploaded one called Deadsy off a VHS, but overdubbed the sound with a music track. Rather disrespectfully. Get the idea though, pretty cool.
I love this one:
Ha, I loved Deadsy back in the day. I did a degree in animation so watched a LOT of shorts.
This turned up in my fb feed the other day. Slow start, but it left me in pieces at the end, my gran's fading away in hospital at the moment.
Will have to come back to this and watch them at home. Great thread!
This thread has reminded me of a really short film I had an idea of animating for a uni assignment. Not really in the same league as the others, It is about 15 year old now though!
Great thread. Looking forward to settle down with some of these.
A classic from the 1980s.
The Backwater Gospel
Found this when Justin Cross used it in a video ([url=
]'Drink The Water'[/url] for any country fans), loved the animation.
This is one of my faves I had on VHS -
Great that we've got some common interests..!
Looking forward to seeing more of this stuff.
One thing I really love about the genre is that it can be of anything at all.. there are no boundaries really and its all about the imagination and application of the animator. Stop Frame became a thing for me a while back, typically coming into it via Tim Burton then YouTube became a portal for showcasing CGI and Cartoons, and I just fell in love with it.. I though I was on my own in my liking for this stuff.. how wrong I am... brilliant.
Good/Bad/Old/New whatever...
Any Bill Plympton fans? 🙂
Had a vhs full of his vids. My father-in-law recorded a programme about trains over the top of it 😥
i've been watching a number of animated shorts from Oates studios.

Love this stuff
Not just my favorite animated short film but one of my favorite films ever.
