Where can I get one that doesn't cost a fortune and doesn't fall apart after 5 minutes? (Or do I have to choose one?).
We have several, ranging from originals from the 60s, originals from the last few years and John Lewis versions.
The originals are better. Waaaay better, in every way. The 60s ones feel sturdier than the modern ones.
The John Lewis ones are actually pretty good, though.
IKEA.
Ikea.
Get the ones they used in Gravity
I've looked at the John Lewis ones but they start at £90 and I'm not really sure I want to spend that on a lamp (unless I have to, of course).
So the IKEA ones are good, are they?
Sure I paid around £40 or £50 for my JL ones. Must have been in a sale.
I had an IKEA one for a few years without any issues. Nice weighty base so you can adjust it without it toppling over. Just giving it to my mother who's happy with it.
Have a look on eBay. Much cheaper
£12 in homebase today. Check online?
I've just bought a Homebase one, but things are already working loose on it, after only a few days, which prompted this question.
The John Lewis ones are actually pretty good, though
Apart from the swiches being made of cheese and all the nasty plastic bits.
OP
Scout around for a second hand lamps, the old ones are great, even if you have to rewire them.

I bought a knackered old 60's anglepoise for a few quid and stripped and resprayed it. Looks awesome on my desk now...

Nearly 20 years too late, dear boy.
Different requirements if you're actually going to move them around- cheapies are fine if you just want to stick them in place and leave them but they soon go wrong if you move them. But ours hasn't moved for about 10 years so why worry?
I move mine a fair bit as it doubles as ambient lighting and a reading light.
Original as in the original brand, rather than copies!
I have a Type 75 here in front of me and a Type 1228 beside the bed, I got them both from John Lewis but I can't remember paying that much for them.
LED lamps from Ikea fitted to both.

What method did you use to strip it ? or did you go over the old paint ?
I used to have a well used black Type 75 (80's?) that dad gave me when I was a kid but it was thrown out after a lab fire in Uni (I stupidly took it in to help with photos) so my GF bought me an original 50's 1227 as a Christmas present when I graduated.
I have since come into the possession of some modern type 75's with the plastic elbow hinge not the original design type on my 1227 and old 75 which are no where near as nice but have also got a large number of the PL fluorescent bulb types as I wanted a couple for my new lab and ended up with about a dozen. I was going to start a topic about them seeing if anyone thought it would be best to clean them up and sell them as is or possibly try converting one to LED as I want for my lab and seeing if it sold better and wouldnt need the starter plug thing.
Remembered I had a photo:
any ideas on what they go for?
had my ikea lamp must be nearly 20 years now works well and the blubs last well... only 20 watts most used as uplighter.

I just bought a floor mount anglepoise from amazon via a camel camel camel price drop alert. Got a reduction from £160 to £69 by waiting a few weeks.
