You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Hello, its been a while but you guys rock for stuff like this
Apart from the occasional quick Boris Bike I hardly use phones for Strava preferring my Garmin however did a 4h ride this week and am amazed how much battery and data it used and now Im wondering if this is normal.
Samsung Galaxy S9. 2y old but battery usually lasts all day with decent use. Software updated about 3 weeks ago
Launched Strava at beginning of ride and didnt look at it until the end
Have none of the clever stuff like tracking/beacons turned on.
Checked a couple of Whatsapps and took some photos half way round but that was it for phone use
After 4h my battery had dropped to 30% capacity from fully charged and Strava had used 400MB of data. Which seems a lot. Battery stats confirm it was Strava which used all this battery wih negligible use from anything else
So...... is this normal?? Both the battery and data use seem high. Geez 400MB, I mean WTF did it do with all of that?
Cheers, and thanks in advance
Strava doesn't need to use any data. Strava works on my phone in airplane mode as it only needs GPS. Does use a fair bit of battery though.
Have you got your photo's auto backing up to Google or similar? Â That would use a lot of data.
Yes, photos back up to Google but the phone definitely lists Strava as also using 400MB
Any apps running in the background will consume battery power as the processor is continuously running and your phone might be connecting to remote servers and sending data to them so your phone will be hunting for a signal all the time.
The main battery hog is your screen so if it's large and on full brightness then that'll drain your battery significantly.
I uninstalled Strava in the end and used Locus Maps. It's not free but it is inexpensive. It has a plethora of features, perhaps too complicated for some, but it takes advantage of the Strava API and can record the ride whilst in your back pocket and then you can crop the ride, if you so wish, then upload it to Strava as either 'public' or 'private'. You'll not be involved in the social aspect unles you log into the Strava web page but I can attest to Locus using very little power as I used it to navigate 390 mile audaxes amongst some other long international rides, charged via a dynamo.
If navigating using the screen then the Locus has a setting to turn the screen on only when a voice announcement is made so that conserves lots of power.
If you want to see what is connecting to the internet then download a free app called NetGuard. It is a firewall and tells you what is connecting to the net and where the app is connecting to.
That doesn't seem right - Strava's not actually uploading owt while you're riding (is my understanding). So while the GPS might use a fair amount of juice (down to 30% still sounds high), it's definitely not normal
Maybe did an app update during your ride? My routes are usually 2 to 3 hours and I'll lose maybe 10 to 20% battery during that time (Xiaomi Android phone) - so that 70% drop doesn't seem normal.
I put the phone into airplane mode. Stops it using power hunting for connections. Lasted for a C2C.
Also reduces temptation to do online social!!
Poor mobile reception guzzles battery, I'm on way home from Prestatyn where Three Mobile is dire indoors and barely better than 56k outdoors...
I've had to recharge my mobile's 4000mAh battery ~200% per day!!!
O2 network including Gift Gaff is decent up there.
