A friend with an Android handset is heading to the States in a week or so and is looking for a satnav app that can use offline maps. My suggestion was Skobbler which I have on an iPhone. I don't know what's available for Android though. Any suggestions of anything else more recent?

If it's for a hire car, DD, you can easily get one. The SUV (natch) I had in California a couple of months back had a very good satnav system. With a seriously sexy voice...."Turn right on to Avenue of the Staaaarrsss" 🙂

@O'Flashearty, I mentioned that. However, the cars at which they're looking to rent don't have SatNav in them and the hire companies are looking at £9ish a day to rent one. 😯

@Cougar, I'll mention that to them, thanks.

@ohnohesback, doesn't NavFree use data or can you download maps relevant to your area?

I downloaded UK mapping. US mapping was an option but I'd imagine that unless you were specific it would be a large download.

Ah right, cheers. Cheaper the better for them I think so I'll mention that too. I take it NavFree uses Open Street mapping or something like that.

If they have a UK satnav or can borrow one, it might be worth downloading a US map if they can. We did that with an old TomTom for about £20 and it worked a treat.

Cheers TT, I'll mention that to them. They have an old TomTom one so it might be worth looking at that option. Tbh, I think they just want to minimise the amount of gadgets they have to carry. They have a six-month old that's pretty much bent them in two with the amount of stuff they have to take for him. 🙂

CoPilot Live US maps are very cheap. I bought it but didn't install it, just in case, because it was less than a tenner, £6.99, IIRC.
Just checked, and CoPilot Live Premium HD USA is £10.99, that's for iOS, I don't know about Android, but I'm sure it's not far off.

We spend a fair amount of time in Florida and i have always used Navfree as it doesnt need a data connection.
It works well enough for me.
