The last 4 Android handsets I've had I've always rooted them when I got them, as it seemed the only way to move saved data from games etc across to the new handset. (Bootloader unlocked, rooted and backed up using TiBackup).
My current phone is a Moto G 4G (mk.1?) and Im getting a Moto G mk.3 next week. I understand there is a moto migrate app which can basically moves everything across to the new phone with little grief.
I dont tend to install customer ROM or play about with any of the fiddly stuff.
So do I need root or not? If I dont get rooted, will I miss out or cause problems backing up later?

I'd love to root my Xperia M4 to delete all the bloatware but it has an unlockable bootloader 🙁

You won't need to root. The new Moto basically set up a direct Wi-Fi link to the old phone. Did it a month back for the wife.

That won't be a problem for the OP, the Moto G3 ships with very little bloat. Plus if you root it you probably won't be able to use banking apps if that matters at all.

I think it depends if the new phone will have marshmallow pre-installed when you get it, because when I installed it on my moto x2 and my girlfriend's g3 it said that Moto migrate had been retired because marshmallow covers all of its functionality. However, I'm not sure either migrate or marshmallow itself cover transferring saved games etc to a new phone. My advice would be to try it with migrate if the new phone is on lollipop and then root after upgrading to marshmallow if it doesn't work.

Thanks everyone.
TBH Im not seeing any compelling reason why I should root it at the moment. If I can migrate my game data without it then I probably wont bother. Its always a hassle rooting and usually ends up taking me a tense couple of hours to do it.
I had Sonys in the past which have lots of bloat, whereas, as others have said Motorola stuff is pretty clean.
