Probably a weekly thread but my search'fu is weak

Aside from repair, I like the G4 but the charging port is now temperamental and I really don't want to drop another $150 on repair.

So, whats the go to phone for close to vanilla android?
Very good camera is a must, LG G4 size or below. Minimal bezel, FHD or above resolution
In an ideal world I'd get a Pixel2 XL for me, a Pixel 2 sized phone for Mrs Me but $$ and the low screen resolution seems to miss the mark on the smaller version.

XZ2 + XZ2 compact?

Any other android pairs or cant miss deals? Nokia?, Xiaomi?

Something from Huawei or Honor?

I moved from the Huawei Mate 9 to the Pixel 2xl and really miss the battery life of the Mate 9. The build quality and camera are also excellent.

Huawei's budget brand Honor get some really good reviews too.

What's your budget? Do you want a contract or SIM free?

G5 is a big improvement on the G4 (I have both).

I'd have another fairly happily.

You can get a Samsung S7 in mint condition for £200-220 and they've just had the Oreo update, which it's pretty fancy and means it's bang up to date. Waterproof, amazing camera, decent battery, etc.

Get the non-edge one...

look at something on the android One programme if you want pure android and 2 years guaranteed OS updates . I've got a Nokia 7 Plus which is being considered in press as a cheaper version of the pixel xl, however the camera pic quality is not considered particularly anything to write home about (it's perfectly fine for my requirements).

Nokia are rolling out their 'pro' camera app to existing models (just got it on the Nokia 8), which is also on their newer models. Makes a big improvement as now have the semi-manual* controls in an interface much like the old Nokias of Lumia days.

* - can adjust focus and shutter speed but aperture is automatic.

p.s. OP quotes in dollars $. US based? May affect availability of some phones, and deals are different (is it still all tied to contracts over there, little SIM free/unlocked stuff?)

Looking for Sim Free, I can get most stuff on contract but the difference between what I'm paying on a byop plan and a new contract with a handset means a contract handset is expensive. Sim Free offers don't really exist over here. Its RRP or nothing for an outright purchase so $1000 for a flagship or add at least $30/mo plus a buy in of $0-400 for a contract handset.

It used to be that UK/Eu phones didn't work well with Canadian carriers, but most phones are global now, so I'm less likely to have issues buying abroad.

Not super keen on Samsung's UI. (S3 experience)

Motorola is interesting and I see many rave about them but the g6 is 'coming soon'

Lg g5 I'd skip simply because it has bootloop issues too, g6/v30 maybe as it has a 2year lg warranty now.

Curious about the Huawei, honor, xiamomi phones. They seem to be trying pretty hard and the mi mix2 looks super...but shopping options seem risky.

What's wrong with the charge port? I've twice fixed dodgy connections by sharpening a cocktail stick and then digging all the fluff out of the USB port on the phone. Maybe I just have linty pockets.

I'm very tempted by the Mi Mix 2 (or 2s if you're feeling spendy) at the moment but my G3 just refuses to die so I'm hanging on to that for now. The OnePlus 6 looks pretty nice too and was on offer on Gearbest I think this morning, though might have sold out by now (and you may not want to import from China).

No experience with the MIUI Android personally but I don't think it's super intrusive.

If you want to go cheaper then the Honor 9 Lite seems to be a pretty decent deal at the moment, but it's a mid / low end phone rather than a flagship.

I paid about £300 for a Nokia 8 (John Lewis) about a month ago and have been pretty pleased with it.

Android without any bloatware, camera is good enough for me, decent battery life, etc.

If there is a negative is that protective case availability is somewhat limited.

I like my G5 but battery life seems important to the OP and I've been unimpressed with mine.

What’s wrong with the charge port?

tried lint removal, it just wont retain any cables.. I have to strategically place the phone to charge.
Can't see any lint or other stuff in there. Using car chargers.. far chance now without electrical tape to keep it all together.

Do a bit of googling for "wake lock". I was getting nearly 2 days out of my 5. Bought a second hand 5S and that only lasted 10 hours. Turns out Outlook for Android, plus the interim Google Play services which supports upload/download was keeping my CPU awake.

Uninstalled outlook, reverted to Gmail and - this was only last night - today I switched the phone on at 6:45 and its current showing 81% with a average level of use, with the battery saying 1.5 days to go...

I've had a Moto X4 for a few months now and I really like it.

Virtually stock Android (updated to Oreo when i switched it on), waterproof and dust proof, dual lens camera and 32gb of storage.

Camera takes much better images than my old Z3 Compact.

I only paid £199 for it, which I thought was a good deal.

I've just upgraded from an S7 edge to a Huawei Mate 10 Pro and would recommend both.

Despite doom mongering the edge never broke and the extra screen size is useful compared to a normal S7. The later generation of phones with skinny bezels and less wasted space are worth looking at.

Neither current Samsung experience nor the Huawei EMUI are really that intrusive compared to touchwiz of old.

I was very keen to get a waterproof phone for biking but if you look on YouTube there are people dunk testing all sorts of phones that aren't officially waterproof and the phones survive ok. Certainly ok for taking with you on a ride.

As mentioned above Nokia and Motorola are a good bet if you must have pure android and Nokia are of course on the Android One programme. Motorola seem to given up supporting their phones as well as they used to so they might be stock but updates aren't that common.

Could try to get hold of a wireless charging back panel for the G4 and charge it that way instead of the cable?

I also have a G4 which had a warranty motherboard replacement a year into owning it. Which also replaced the charge port. Which is good. Keeps it fresh a bit longer.

Mine is doing loads of weird stuff like ghost screen touches and the screen is going a bit funky. It burns and goes purple at the edges if the screen is on for a while. And can see the icons across the top if you put a full screen video on.

Great phone. But it is on its way out i think.

This is a pretty good deal for a Nokia 8, especially with 6gb / 128gb. UK based though, obviously. According to Camel3 it was down to £269.99 briefly, but it still looks like a bargain.

OnePlus 6. End of thread.

Not really, that phone is £469. Other phones for half the price have 95% of the capability.
