Android query. Strava or Google Wallet

I have got a samsung a53.

My old phone required a fingerprint to access wallet even  with the phone unlocked.  This one doesn't , so I have set the phone to lock after 30 seconds.

This is a bit inconvenient when using strava.  Face unlock doesn't work with riding glasses.

Can I either add an extra layer of security for Wallet or set Strava to stay on for 10 minutes?

Maybe I'm missing something here - why do you need the phone unlocked for any length of time for strava?

I seem to recall there is a way to set the phone to always on with certain apps (or accessories such as a hrm) but can't for the life of me recall how

I'm not really sure what the issue is, but I use a pattern to unlock my android phone, not face or finger print.

I've just started Strava on my phone, turned on NFC, and opened Google wallet, and neither seems to interfere with the other.

Even if I leave this page open without activity the phone locks after 30 seconds and needs security to open it.

If someone pinches my phone when it's unlocked and keep it open,   they can go on a massive spending spree.

Therefore I either want to add another layer of security to wallet so that I can leave it 10 minutes before the screen autolocks or make strava available on the lock screen.

How well pattern unlock will work with winter gloves I don't know.

Are you wanting to constantly see strava ? It works/records when locked. I can't understand why you wouldn't have a phone autolock anyway, even if you don't have google wallet there is other private info there you'd not want falling into the wrong hands.

TBH, a dedicated GPS is best on the bike, put the phone somewhere safe.

It works well with the end of your nose.

Not only strava but it’s a pain when trying to follow a route. I do have another phone I purely use for bike duties but was trying to combine it all in my main phone. Being able to read messages , change tunes and see where I’m going would be nice.
It’s all the fault of Google Wallet.

Are you using Strava for navigation purposes??

If not, I don't understand why you need phone unlocked for Strava....

Hmmm... I don't know. Sorry, I'm still not really understanding.

I have my screen to go off and lock after 10mins activity if I leave it on. I can increase it to 30 mins as the max. In practice I tend to turn the screen off as soon as I've finished using it. If it's on while riding because I'm using the map maverick GPS) it will stay on, but I turn it off as soon as I don't need to see the map.

Strava continues runs when the screen is off and locked if I'm recording a ride/walk. Or are you using Strava to follow a route? I don't do that.

Edit.... Ah.... I think I see... I don't have an additional security for wallet, so yes, in theory if my screen was open and someone got my phone they could turn on NFC and use it and keep using it as long as they kept the screen active. Chances of that with me are remarkably low considering when I live, ride and walk. Plus I turn my screen off when not using it.

I understand what the OP wants. Basically they want Google pay/wallet to require a fingerprint to use it. Bit like a banking app.

My phone doesn't have this and it seems like an obvious oversight. But I figured stuff it, if someone steals my phone and goes on a spending spree it's no different to someone stealing my wallet. Except I can't remotely track and lock my wallet.

I had a look at wallet and I can't see away to add another lock, but under password manager, then settings (the cog) you can disable automatic sign in, so that you would have to put your password in. But it looks like you'd then have to put your password in for everything on your phone each time you want to use it, not just wallet.

I have found a thing called an App Locker.
All my apps are there on the screen and all you do is press the padlock button and that app needs a fingerprint to open.
Settings and Wallet now need a fingerprint even when the phone is unlocked.

Are you all sure that the Google wallet works that way?  I’m on Apple and whilst I can open the wallet app with the phone unlocked you can’t actually pay for anything without the Face ID. I’d be astonished if the Google wallet wasn’t the same.

precisely this. Surely wallet needs face unlock (or equivalent) at the moment of making a payment? Apple Pay does. Thereby negating the need to set a short lock time.

I'm sure Google won't let you pay for anything if the phone isn't unlocked but I suspect, if you don't set auto lock, you'll be able to use it to pay for stuff. Silly not to use auto lock anyway.

If I take my Samsung Watch off, it asks for a code if I want to access anything. You probably need to see what happens. TBH I'd rather my phone is storred safely packed away in it's thick flip case, inside a camelbak, rather than use it on the bike getting covered in mud, gritty fingers etc, hence the Garmin for that !   Get a used Explore (v1) if you can for a cheap option.

Having picked my mates 530 out of the mud last year after he stacked it on a descent, a phone wouldn't survive that.

No, Wallet doesn't require anything other than the phone to be unlocked. Does seem like an obvious flaw but I've never noticed it before as my phone locks after about 15 seconds anyway.

If you use Google pay in something like a parking app you need the finger print to authorise it but whilst related, it's different to wallet

Considering a credit or debit card requires no lock, it doesn't seem like much of a problem the way Android does it. Using face unlock every time on Apple seems like a faff to me

Your phone will often require a lock for larger transactions, but not for smaller.

You should be able to force unlock for NFC in phone settings

Finally, if your phone is nicked I don't believe you're liable for the contactless payments. The bank should just swallow the cost.

Mine does...though I'm not exactly sure what the phone wallet limit is (and the limit is not related to whether the phone is locked or not)
