My service provider charges for picture messages. Is there some kind app that will work around this? I know I can send pictures via facebook/email etc for free but then the recipient won't get a 'bing' notification as I've they are all set to silent to stop the phone going crazy. It's only to the mrs so happy to put an app on both phones.

Yes, whatsapp amongst others. It also includes lots of emoticons such as (my personal favourite) 'turd with a smiley face'

WhatsApp is free for a year, then you pay a few pennies. Email works but you can't send emoticons of dragons and smiley poo
