My contacts are all on sim and i have a memory card i can remove and put in new handset.

Settings, Accounts & backup, Smart switch might do it for you.

Use the full power of Google and back everything (apps, contacts etc) up to your Google account, then you just need to swap the memory card across, switch the new phone on and log in. Job jobbed.

This.  Samsungs come with Samsung Beam/you can download it from the Play store.   You set it running, they connect, new phone becomes a replica of old phone.

My last 2 new phonees came with a dongle that let you connect the two phones together with the USB cable. Would be surprised a new Samsung wouldnt do the same.

My Pixel came with a similar thing, just plug the old and new phones together and the system does the rest.

The shop initially offered to set it up and were on about downloading this app and connecting with wi-fi and it would take a few hours... I said I'd sort it, took it all home and it was done in about 5 minutes.

I used Smart Switch to do exactly what the OP is trying to achieve. Make sure SS is on both phones (might need to download the app onto the older one).

It set my new phone up in exactly the same way as the old one, ie desktop background, desktop app folders etc etc. The process took minutes of input by myself instead of what I though was going to take hours.

If you are using an Android phone without a Google account, you might as well be using a Nokia tbh (a bit wide of the mark, but you get my point)

Then they'll still be on the SIM when you put it into a new phone. But really, as others have alluded to that's been a crap way of doing things since back in the pre-smartphone era.

Get everything into a Google account, and have it sync back to the cloud. When you set up your new one it'll give you the option to restore either from the cloud or another device.

One thing to watch for here. There's two ways of setting up an SD card under (newer) versions of Android - either conventionally as a second 'hard drive' or what's called "Adopted Storage" which kinda merges the two into one big lump. If yours is the former you should be able to swap it over and whatever data is on there will carry over, if the latter then it's tied to your current handset and it'll need to be formatted for use in the new one.

Caveat on the above: Samsung probably have their own proprietary utils too, I'm not familiar with those.
