I've been using noom, which is ok but doesn't seem to record elevation, what else is there? I have looked at MyTracks but it appears to rely on 3g as well as gps, any other suggestions?

My Tracks works fine without 3g; I've used it regularly in parts of the North York Moors where there's no chance of getting a signal; let alone a 3g one ...

No idea 🙂 - tbh I've given up on the whole phone-tracking thing and switched over to a GPS watch instead; saves carrying a seperate HRM.

I use Mytracks regularly and like the fact I can see the route overlaid on Google Maps instantly, but on my phone (Galaxy S) it does seem to struggle to place my position on a road for example and last night gave a gradient of 140% on something that was 20% the night previously. I've seen a free iphone app do a much better job.

But then again, its a free app to do something that the phone is not particularly designed for and will do me until I get something with better results.

i used to have SportsTracker on my old Nokia, that was good. I am going to give the Android version a go. It didn't overlay on maps though, it may do now, not sure.

My Tracks is the one I regularly use. It doesn't need the 3G connection, but this does enable it to get a faster GPS lock.
EDIT - if you don't have 3g signal, you won't be able to see your track overlaid on a map, until you get back to civilisation. It will still keep up with where you are though.

It works really well, although I don't think the elevation data is anything particularly accurate. It can vary by a lot even when comparing results from the same loop.
ANOTHER EDIT - it works well, even in thick-ish forest at Thetford. I tried another one for a while (Sports Tracker, I think) and it kept losing GPS signal or something as there were massive gaps in the trace - and this was at Rutland water, where it is mainly open.

I use everytrail pro - yes, you have to pay but tbh for a couple of quid, I'm really not going to worry about that - you wouldn't worry about buying 2/3 of a pint (less probably...), would you?

It tracks well, you can download maps to it so you don't need a signal to actually navigate, you can upload all your rides to their website, you can upload pictures to the site (and then link them online as below) you can import/export the routes - basically it works really well.

I use Endomondo, and so do a few collegues I work with, we think it is great.

You can track what you and your mates are doing and set challenges like 'fastest 3 miles'. You can even send them messages that get read out while they are out cycling, which is obviously very amusing.

It seems to work with most types of phone, although the software for each one is slightly different, and it is free.

It also does various other things and I would highly recommend giving it a try.

I wouldn't get hung up on altitude when it's derived from a GPS reading. It's massively inaccurate.

Another vote for endomondo - it is great.

The only drawback is that my Mrs can check where I am in real time and send me encouragement (abuse) via the app which gets read out to me and everyone I am riding with - both times she has used this feature she has found me at a 'cake stop' and now thinks we don't actually ride our bikes, just go to tea shops.

But seriously, you can track and compete with your friends, share routes and keep a log of everything that you do.

Can you switch that functionality off? sounds like it would eat in to your data allowence in order to do that.

You can turn off 'always on' data sending, but that is how it uploads your information to the website so you and your mates can review it, so you would have to upload manually at some point.

I did just over 100 miles last month and it used ~5MB of data to give you some idea of data usage and that was with it sending data all the time during rides.
